Vladimir Giorgio Scerbanenco, ucraino di nascita (Kiev, 1911) ma italiano d’adozione e di formazione, è morto a Milano nel 1969 dopo essere stato uno tra i maggiori protagonisti della nascita e dello sviluppo della letteratura di massa in Italia. Autentica «macchina per scrivere storie», ha frequentato con perizia e disinvoltura tutti i generi cosiddetti «paraletterari» attribuendo loro nuova dignità. È stato autore di un centinaio di romanzi, di svariati racconti e di numerosi articoli che testimoniano un percorso letterario coerente, personale e innovativo riconosciuto in parte e solo tardivamente dalla critica. Circa vent’anni dopo aver significativamente contribuito al rinnovamento della letteratura «gialla» classica, alla fine degli anni Sessanta, ha usato la propria acuta sensibilità noir per sconvolgere l’immaginario letterario nazionale. In questi ultimi lavori, in particolare, non si tratta di risolvere un enigma, ma piuttosto di rappresentare e comprendere la sfera delle sofferenze individuali all’interno di più ampie determinazioni sociali che pesano fatalmente sulla possibilità del singolo di esperire razionalmente la realtà. Alla forma sempre-uguale dei romanzi polizieschi, Scerbanenco aggiunge qui nuovi elementi referenziali che mettono i lettori di fronte al paradosso costante della coppia dialettica «ripetizione/innovazione». È grazie a questi lavori crudi e violenti, aventi come protagonista seriale Duca Lamberti, un medico reietto diventato per necessità e vocazione investigatore sui generis, che il genere poliziesco, per mezzo dell’accumulazione iperrealista degli elementi più evidenti della contemporaneità, inizia a mostrare, in modo perspicuo e originale, le contraddizioni della rapida trasformazione della vita quotidiana italiana negli anni del «miracolo economico».
