La mise en place de l'école primaire, gratuite, obligatoire et laïque en France à partir de 1880 ne s'est pas faite «en vase clos». Certes ce sont bien les grands principes de la «tradition» républicaine française issue de la Révolution qui ont guidé l'action législative et réglementaire des Jules Ferry, Paul Bert, René Goblet... . Cependant les réalisations scolaires de la Suisse et de la Belgique, pays en partie francophones, étaient parfaitement connues et suivies par des administrateurs comme Ferdinand Buisson qui a enseigné à Neuchâtel entre 1886 et 1870, et par des «militants» comme Jean Macé qui, en 1865, ramène d'un séjour en Belgique l'idée de la Ligue de l'enseignement. Prenant essentiellement comme base documentaire la Revue pédagogique, l'ouvrage se propose, après une présentation fouillée de l'idéologie qui inspire la création de l'école républicaine, d'analyser les «effets de miroir» qui se jouent dans un certain nombre de textes, entre 1878 et 1900: l'école suisse et belge au miroir de l'idéologie scolaire française, l'école française au miroir des deux premières. Une perspective «cavalière» de l'évolution des trois systèmes d'enseignement primaire jusqu'à nos jours clôt l'ouvrage.

In France’s Third Republic, secularism was, for its adherents, a new faith, a civic religion founded on a rabid belief in progress and the Enlightenment conviction that men (and women) could remake their world. And yet with all of its pragmatic smoothing over of the supernatural edges of Catholicism, the Third Republic engendered its own fantastical ways of seeing by embracing observation, corporeal dynamism, and imaginative introspection. How these republican ideals and the new national education system of the 1870s and 80s - the structure meant to impart these ideals - shaped belle époque popular culture is the focus of this book. The author reassesses the meaning of secularization and offers a cultural history of this period by way of an interrogation of several fraught episodes which, although seemingly disconnected, shared an attachment to the potent moral and aesthetic directives of French republicanism: a village’s battle to secularize its schools, a scandalous novel, a vaudeville hit featuring a nude celebrity, and a craze for female boxing. Beginning with the writer and performer Colette (1873–1954) as a point of entry, this re-evaluation of belle époque popular culture probes the startling connections between republican values of labor and physical health on the one hand, and the cultural innovations of the decades preceding World War I on the other.

Crèches, haltes-garderies, aujourd'hui multi-accueil... Mais d'où nous viennent les lieux d'accueil de la petite enfance ? Quand, comment, pourquoi, sont nés les premiers établissements de garde ? Ce sont des hommes qui, au milieu du XIXe, entrevoient leur nécessité pour répondre à la problématique sociale construite autour de l'éducation du jeune enfant des classes dites indigentes. Le 14 novembre 1844 est créée la première crèche, crèche de Chaillot, à Paris, sous l'impulsion de Firmin Marbeau. Crèche, par analogie avec la crèche de Bethléem. Voilà qui ouvre bien des indices sur le curriculum initial des crèches. A partir de la constitution d'un corpus, l'ouvrage reconstruit un temps de l'histoire des crèches, de 1844 à 1870, période pouvant être définie comme celle de leur institutionnalisation. Celle-ci révèle un projet philanthropique qui se voudra aussi projet d'éducation populaire. Projet tout à la fois normatif et audacieux, au sein duquel une certaine représentation de l'enfant et le rapport social aux parents peuvent s'interpréter. Une utopie. Qui n'a jamais fait l'unanimité et a parfois déchaîné les passions. Un pari sur le petit enfant pauvre pour réformer les comportements parentaux et les moeurs populaires, et refonder le pacte social et politique dans un contexte socialement et politiquement agité. Dès lors, la tension fondatrice à l'origine des crèches émerge - promouvoir le travail des femmes en même temps que l'idéal de la mère éducatrice au foyer. Héritage qui taraude cette institution - et les politiques afférentes - encore aujourd'hui. Appréhender l'histoire, pour ouvrir une autre voie ?
