From Deliberation To Demonstration written by Paula Cossart and has been published by ECPR Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Political Science categories.

This book, at the crossroads of history and political science, reveals the transformation of political rallies in France from the last years of the Second Empire until the end of the Third Republic. Originally designed by Republicans to teach citizenship and form political opinion through open debate, rallies gradually became a stage dedicated to the show of force, at the initiative of various emerging political formations. This distortion is apparent by the turn of the twentieth century, and became even more marked in the rallies between the two world wars. Faced with this transformation, the government did not hesitate, in the second half of the 1930s, to invalidate the liberal credo that had endorsed the right of assembly since the installation of the Republic. French participatory democracy has a history that this book helps to trace.

Bringing together historians and political scientists, this unique collaboration compares nineteenth-century civil societies that failed to develop lasting democracies with civil societies that succeeded. Much of the current literature on the connection between civil society and consolidating democracy focuses exclusively on single, contemporary polities that are ever-changing and uncertain. By studying historical cases, the authors are able to demonstrate which civil societies developed in tandem with lasting democracies and which did not. Contrasting these two sets of cases, the book both enlightens readers about individual countries and extracts lessons about the connections between civil society and democracy in contemporary times. Above all, the authors ask the vital but under-researched question, OHow and why does democratic civil society develop?O

The Price Of Democracy written by Julia Cagé and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-31 with Political Science categories.

Why and how systems of political financing and representation in Europe and North America give outsized influence to the wealthy and undermine democracy, and what we can do about it. One person, one vote. In theory, everyone in a democracy has equal power to decide elections. But it’s hardly news that, in reality, political outcomes are heavily determined by the logic of one dollar, one vote. We take the political power of money for granted. But does it have to be this way? In The Price of Democracy, Julia Cagé combines economic and historical analysis with political theory to show how profoundly our systems in North America and Europe, from think tanks and the media to election campaigns, are shaped by money. She proposes fundamental reforms to bring democracy back into line with its egalitarian promise. Cagé shows how different countries have tried to develop legislation to curb the power of private money and to develop public systems to fund campaigns and parties. But these attempts have been incoherent and unsystematic. She demonstrates that it is possible to learn from these experiments in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere to design a better system that would increase political participation and trust. This would involve setting a strict cap on private donations and creating a public voucher system to give each voter an equal amount to spend in support of political parties. More radically, Cagé argues that a significant fraction of seats in parliamentary assemblies should be set aside for representatives from disadvantaged socioeconomic groups. At a time of widespread political disenchantment, The Price of Democracy is a bracing reminder of the problems we face and an inspirational guide to the potential for reform.

The Lost Paradise written by Jonathan Glasser and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-08 with History categories.

The urban centers of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia are home to performance traditions whose practitioners trace them to al-Andalus, or medieval Muslim Spain. According to its devotees, the repertoire was passed down over the centuries from master to disciple. Today it is ubiquitous in the Maghreb and its diaspora, and is held up as a quasi-official classical music that expresses an abiding link to a prestigious precolonial past. Despite its deep roots, Andalusi music has also profoundly changed in the past one hundred years, and it is now considered a threatened art. In "The Lost Paradise," Jonathan Glasser accounts for the longevity of Andalusi music s revivalist project through ethnographic and archival research carried out in Algeria, Morocco, and France. He treats Andalusi music as a circulatory practice that privileges the transmission of embodied knowledge from master to disciple. The genealogical model embeds Andalusi music in social relations, closely linking it to the cultivation of old urban identities that reach across North Africa and into al-Andalus. At the same time, it is precisely the genealogical model that makes the repertoire so elusive as a social practice, giving rise to both the longstanding claim that some masters withhold valuable songs and the efforts to counteract alleged hoarding via the printed word. By looking to the performative, textual, institutional, and emotive practices surrounding Andalusi music, Glasser evokes a tradition animated by subtle tensions between secrecy and publicness, keeping and giving, embodiment and detachment."

French Cycling written by Hugh Dauncey and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-21 with Social Science categories.

An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. French Cycling: a Social and Cultural History aims to provide a balanced and detailed analytical survey of the complex leisure activity, sport, and industry that is cycling in France. Identifying key events, practices, stakeholders and institutions in the history of French cycling, the volume presents an interdisciplinary analysis of how cycling has been significant in French society and culture since the late Nineteenth century. Cycling as Leisure is considered through reference to the adoption of the bicycle as an instrument of tourism and emancipation by women in the 1880s, for example, or by study of the development in the 1990s of long-distance tourist cycle routes. Cycling as Sport and its attendant dimensions of amateurism/professionalism, national identity, the body and doping, and other issues is investigated through study of the history of the Tour de France, the track-racing organised at the Vélodrome d'hiver in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and other emblematic events. Cycling as Industry and economic activity is considered through an assessment of how cycling firms have contributed to technological innovation at various junctures in France's economic development. Cycling and the Media is investigated through analysis of how cyclesport has contributed to developments in the French press (in early decades) but also to new trends in television and radio coverage of sports events. Based on a very wide range of primary and secondary sources, the volume aims to present in clear language an explanation of the varied significance of cycling in France over the last hundred years.
