La stesura dell’Improvvisatore ebbe inizio in Italia, nel corso di un viaggio che, tra il 1833 e il 1834, portò Andersen a Firenze, Roma, Napoli, Capri, Milano e Venezia, e dove l’autore conobbe briganti e mendicanti, vide il carnevale romano, avvicinò pittori e scultori nordici e tedeschi, visitò le catacombe, ascoltò le serenate notturne, rimanendo profondamente affascinato dall’arte e dalla natura italiane. La storia dell’Improvvisatore, ovvero la vita di Antonio, misero ragazzino romano che tra povertà, sogni di successo e ambizioni da poeta è costretto a subire il degrado di una squallida dipendenza dai suoi benefattori, è in fondo quella dello stesso Andersen. Anche lui era stato poverissimo, anche lui era dovuto scendere a compromessi e anche lui, durante la stesura di questo suo primo romanzo, conobbe i tortuosi e inquietanti timori dell’autore ai suoi esordi. Il romanzo, di struttura classica ma anche straordinariamente moderna, segnò l’inizio della fama internazionale dello scrittore danese e viene oggi presentato in una nuova edizione curata da Bruno Berni, e corredata di oltre cento illustrazioni inedite che l’autore compose durante il viaggio italiano, di una introduzione della traduttrice Alda Castagnoli Manghi e di una postfazione di Riccardo Reim.

Letitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838) was one of the leading women poets of the second generation of English Romantic writers. Following her predecessor Walter Scott and her contemporary Lord Byron, she was a fluent practitioner and essential innovator of the metrical romance and exerted a strong influence on the work of Victorian poets (especially Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning and Christina Rossetti). This book analyses Landon's poetics, with particular reference to the close relationship between the narrative poem as literary genre and its gender implications. Landon was both an eclectic writer and a literary businesswoman: she was an extremely effective promoter of her literary work in order to support her independent life in London. Furthermore she was the editor of several annuals and gift-books, wrote for magazines, and published numerous poems, novels, and editorials. Her active life and mysterious and premature death in Africa attracted the curiosity of many biographers during the twentieth century, but only in recent times has critical attention been paid to her rich literary output. From the theatrical stage to the literary salon, the figure of Sappho—the ancient poet and inspiring icon of feminine creativity—played a major role in the intertwining histories of improvisation, text, and performance throughout the nineteenth century. Exploring the connections between operatic and poetic improvisation in Italy and beyond, Singing Sappho combines earwitness accounts of famous female improviser-virtuosi with erudite analysis of musical and literary practices. Melina Esse demonstrates that performance played a much larger role in conceptions of musical authorship than previously recognized, arguing that discourses of spontaneity—specifically those surrounding the improvvisatrice, or female poetic improviser—were paradoxically used to carve out a new authority for opera composers just as improvisation itself was falling into decline. With this novel and nuanced book, Esse persuasively reclaims the agency of performers and their crucial role in constituting Italian opera as a genre in the nineteenth century.
