La storia è nota: il 3 ottobre 1935 l’Italia – ansiosa di conquistare un posto al sole fra le potenze coloniali – invase l’Etiopia; sette mesi dopo Mussolini annunciò il ritorno dell’Impero «sui colli fatali di Roma». Fu una guerra nazionale, combattuta da mezzo milione di italiani ansiosi di riscattare il prestigio compromesso dall’Italietta pre-fascista, umiliata dalla «vittoria mutilata»; una guerra moderna, col massiccio uso di mezzi meccanici e aviazione; una guerra criminale, con l’impiego sistematico dei gas nelle fasi più delicate. Fu poi una guerra dimenticata nel cono d’ombra dell’autoassolutoria vulgata del regime da operetta e degli italiani «brava gente». Ma dietro le canzoncine spensierate come Faccetta nera e la propaganda, cosa pensavano davvero gli italiani di allora? Intrecciando abilmente tante fonti coeve, Palmieri dà voce allo spirito del tempo, per mostrarci un Paese illuso dall’«ora solenne», che non arrivò mai. Marco Palmieri Giornalista e saggista, è membro dell’Istituto romano per la storia d’Italia dal fascismo alla resistenza e della Società italiana per lo studio della storia contemporanea. Ha scritto numerosi saggi e articoli sulle vicende politico-militari del Novecento e la loro memoria. In particolare ha pubblicato, con Mario Avagliano, Vincere e vinceremo! Federico Chabod (1901-1960) was one of Italy's best-known historians, noted for his study of Italian history in a European context. This is the first English translation of his most important book. Although he carried out his extensive archival research for this work from 1936 until 1943, the fall of fascism and Chabod's active participation in the Resistance delayed its completion. When it was published in 1951, it was immediately hailed as a masterpiece. Chabod intended to write a new kind of diplomatic history-- one in which political history is seen as part of a larger historical whole. He does not present a detailed chronological account of Italian foreign policy during the period studied, but rather the "moral and material" underpinnings of that policy. In fact, he crafts a highly developed portrait of an age, with the real subjects being the Italian state and society, the ruling class and political culture.
