Das Auffinden von Lösungen für Gleichungen höheren Grades beschäftigt Mathematiker aller Regionen und aller Epochen seit nun mehr ca. 4000 Jahren und ist sogar namensgebend für eines der wichtigsten Teilgebiete der Mathematik. Die Bezeichnung Algebra ist abgeleitet aus dem Titel des Buchs Hisab al-gabr w'al muqabala ("Über die Rechenverfahren durch Ergänzen und Ausgleichen"), das der arabischen Mathematiker AL-KHWARIZIMI ca. im Jahr 830 veröffentlichte. In diesem Buch beschreibt AL-KHWARIZIMI geometrische Lösungsverfahren für quadratische Gleichungen. AL-KHWARIZIMI löst Gleichungen mit den Methoden, die wir heute noch verwenden: Abziehen von gleichen Ausdrücken auf beiden Seiten der Gleichung ("Ausgleichen"), um gleiche Potenzen zusammenzufassen, und Hinüberschaffen eines negativen Gliedes auf die andere Seite ("Ergänzen"), so dass sich positive Koeffizienten ergeben (negative Zahlen wurden ja noch nicht verwendet). Von diesen Arbeiten ausgehend, wird im ersten Teil des Buches einen Überblick über die wichtigsten geschichtlichen Entwicklungen gegeben. Hierbei geht es hauptsächlich um die allgemeine Lösbarkeit von Gleichungen, also um die Suche nach Lösungsformeln. Der zweite Teil widmet sich dann ganz den praktischen Anwendungen, dass heißt hier werden Verfahren beschrieben, mit deren Hilfe man die Lösungen einer Gleichung n-ten Grades näherungsweise berechnen kann. Dabei kommen nur solche Verfahren zum Einsatz, die anschaulich mit den Mitteln der Schulmathematik hergeleitet werden können.

Plato’s view that mathematics paves the way for his philosophy of forms is well known. This book attempts to flesh out the relationship between mathematics and philosophy as Plato conceived them by proposing that in his view, although it is philosophy that came up with the concept of beings, which he calls forms, and highlighted their importance, first to natural philosophy and then to ethics, the things that do qualify as beings are inchoately revealed by mathematics as the raw materials that must be further processed by philosophy (mathematicians, to use Plato’s simile in the Euthedemus, do not invent the theorems they prove but discover beings and, like hunters who must hand over what they catch to chefs if it is going to turn into something useful, they must hand over their discoveries to philosophers). Even those forms that do not bear names of mathematical objects, such as the famous forms of beauty and goodness, are in fact forms of mathematical objects. The first chapter is an attempt to defend this thesis. The second argues that for Plato philosophy’s crucial task of investigating the exfoliation of the forms into the sensible world, including the sphere of human private and public life, is already foreshadowed in one of its branches, astronomy.
