Leggerlo, d’altra parte, può anche mostrare come l’università debba recuperare spontaneità e curiosità, consultando in modo libero le persone che la frequentano. Ci sono cosa da dire, ci sono persone che sono disponibili a dirle, e lo sanno fare.Il libro è rivolto a studenti, docenti, membri degli organi decisori, ai diversi livelli, e a chi abbia interesse per le tematiche universitarie e per le opinioni di studenti ed ex studenti. Il lavoro di ricerca ha come oggetto di studio la valutazione della ricerca universitaria, in un momento in cui il tema della distribuzione delle risorse pubbliche in base a criteri di efficienza e merito è al centro del dibatito politico ed economico. Vengono esaminate e messe a confronto cinque realtà universitarie di paesi europei, al tempo stesso si cerca di evidenziare, atraverso un’indagine campionaria, la percezione dei sistemi di valutazione da parte di ricercatori degli stessi paesi. Lo studio si propone di verificare l’ipotesi che un sistema rigoroso di valutazione della ricerca sia condizione necessaria, ma non sufficiente per produrre un innalzamento qualitativo della ricerca universitaria. Nel nostro paese è imprescindibile un intervento in termini di politiche pubbliche, che valorizzi la ricerca a partire da un più adeguato investimento economico. - The research project focuses on the evaluation of university research, at a moment when a central issue in the political and economic debate is the distribution of public resources based on criteria of efficiency and merit. Five universities in European countries are analyzed and compared, and the perceptions held by the researchers in those countries about evaluation systems are assessed through a survey.The study aims to demonstrate that a rigorous system of research evaluation is a necessary, though insufficient, condition to create an increase in the quality of university research. In our country, what is needed is the enactment of public policies supporting research, beginning with a more adequate economic investment.

In 2001, for the first time in the history of the Italian Republic, an opposition replaced the incumbent government as a consequence of an electoral victory. In the May General Election, the center-left government was ousted and a new right-right majority came into office. It would be premature to suggest that this election represents the birth of a new Italian political system, one that will be based on an ongoing alternation in government between two coalitions and a realignment of voters and parties. In this important volume, major events and personalities of 20th century physics are portrayed through recollections and historiographical works of one of the most prominent figures of European science. A former student of Enrico Fermi, and a leading personality of physical research and science policy in postwar Italy, Edoardo Amaldi devoted part of his career to documenting, both as witness and as historian, some significant moments of 20th century science. The focus of the book is on the European scene, ranging from nuclear research in Rome in the 1930s to particle physics at CERN, and includes biographies of physicists such as Ettore Majorana, Bruno Touschek and Fritz Houtermans.Edoardo Amaldi (Carpaneto, 1908 - Roma, 1989) was one of the leading figures in twentieth century Italian science. He was conferred his degree in physics at Rome University in 1929 and played an active role (as a member of the team of young physicists known as ?the boys of via Panisperna?) in the fundamental research on artificial induced radioactivity and the properties of neutrons, which won the group's leader Enrico Fermi the Nobel Prize for physics in 1938. Following Fermi's departure for the United States in 1938 and the disruption of the original group, Amaldi took upon himself the task of reorganising the research in physics in the difficult situation of post-war Italy. His own research went from nuclear physics to cosmic ray physics, elementary particles and, in later years, gravitational waves. Active research was for him always coupled to a direct involvement as a statesman of science and an organiser: he was the leading figure in the establishment of INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) and has played a major role, as spokesman of the Italian scientific community, in the creation of CERN, the large European laboratory for high energy physics. He also actively supported the formation of a similar trans-national joint venture in space science, which gave birth to the European Space Agency. In these and several other scientific organisations, he was often entrusted with directive responsibilities. In his later years, he developed a keen interest in the history of his discipline. This gave rise to a rich production of historiographic material, of which a significant sample is collected in this volume.

The Author in Criticism:Italo Calvino’s Authorial Image in Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom explores the cultural and historic patterns and differences in the critical readings of Italian author Italo Calvino’s works in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Italy. It considers the external factors that contribute to create recognizable patterns in the readings of Calvino’s texts in different contexts. This volume therefore covers, most notably, matters of genre (science fiction, postmodernism), cultural perceptions and conventions, the (re)current image of the author in different media, academic schools, -curricula and -canons, biographical information (such as gender and background), and translation and the language in which the author speaks (or fails to speak) to us. It traces the influence of these aspects in the academic discourse on Calvino. The Author in Criticism also analyzes Calvino’s various professional roles as writer, editor, essayist, journalist, private correspondent, and public, cosmopolitan intellectual, reappraising their often little acknowledged importance for academic criticism. An important underlying idea is that the preconceived image that every critic has of Calvino before even opening one of his books is often solidified and repeated even in the most refined and complex critical analyses. This volume is composed of 24 papers originally presented as talks at the VIII National Conference of the Italian Association of University Language Centres (Associazione Italiana dei Centri Linguistici Universitari: AICLU), held at the University of Foggia, Italy, between 30 May and 1st June 2013. The contributions fall into five sections: 1) keynote addresses from plenary speakers; 2) innovative challenges for language centres; 3) new developments in teaching language for specific purposes; 4) proposals and case studies in Content and Language Integrated Learning; and 5) the use of new technologies in language learning. 18 papers are in English, four in Italian, one in French and one in German. The fact that three-quarters of the papers are in English reflects the way English has become the lingua franca of academic conferences today. However, in keeping with the ethos of CercleS (Confédération Européenne des Centres de Langues de l’Enseignement Supérieur, the pan-European organisation to which AICLU belongs), which is strongly committed to promoting plurilingualism, it was crucial that contributions would also be accepted in other languages.
