This volume was conceived with the double aim of providing a background and a further context for the new Dumbarton Oaks English translation of the Life of St Neilos from Rossano, founder of the monastery of Grottaferrata near Rome in 1004. Reflecting this double aim, the volume is divided into two parts. Part I, entitled “Italo-Greek Monasticism,” builds the background to the Life of Neilos by taking several multi-disciplinary approaches to the geographical area, history and literature of the region denoted as Southern Italy. Part II, entitled “The Life of St Neilos,” offers close analyses of the text of Neilos’s hagiography from socio-historical, textual, and contextual perspectives. Together, the two parts provide a solid introduction and offer in-depth studies with original outcomes and wide-ranging bibliographies. Using monasticism as a connecting thread between the various zones and St Neilos as the figure who walked over mountains and across many cultural divides, the essays in this volume span all regions and localities and try to trace thematic arcs between individual testimonies. They highlight the multicultural context in which Southern Italian Christians lived and their way of negotiating differences with Arab and Jewish neighbors through a variety of sources, and especially in saints’ lives.

Il confronto interdisciplinare ha messo in luce gli aspetti vitali e creativi di un periodo storico, tra Rinascimento e Barocco, travagliato, ma molto vivace culturalmente, politicamente e anche economicamente, che ha prodotto importantissimi monumenti, opere d'arte e testi letterari, che non sempre, anche a causa della mancanza di studi, sono valorizzati e tutelati come meritano. In questa nostra epoca di conflitti e di tensioni, di relativismi esasperati, di identità aperte e incerte, i saggi qui presentati, oltre a gettare luce sul passato, contribuiscono a far riflettere, sotto molti punti di vista, anche sul presente: su quanto gli scambi e gli incontri tra culture diverse possano risultare arricchenti. Alessandra Anselmi insegna Storia dell'Arte Moderna presso l'Università della Calabria ed è specializzata nello studio dei rapporti tra l'Italia e la Spagna in epoca moderna. Herald of a future third age (status) for mankind, the medieval abbot Joachim of Fiore (d. 1202) attracted and affected many individuals from Dante to Columbus. This book concentrates on the beginning of the story: it proves Joachim intended that he and his own order of monks, the Florensians, were to initiate the beginning of the third age. Using a variety of documents, Stephen Wessley uncovers Joachim's motivations when he broke away from the Cistercian monks to found his own reformed monastic group. Joachim's intended role for his Florensian monks, to be initiators of the new age, Wessley argues, was preserved by them well after Joachim's death. Drawing on manuscript evidence, the author traces this Florensian ideology through a period of major crises in the order to its appropriation by Franciscans.
