Nella seconda metà del XX secolo il confronto con il regime comunista segna in maniera fondamentale la storia della Chiesa cattolica nell’Europa centro-orientale. La Chiesa, che assume una posizione di netto rifiuto del comunismo, nei fatti realizza tuttavia una strategia e una tattica diversificate a seconda dei periodi e dei paesi, in considerazione dei vari gruppi intraecclesiastici. Infatti la Santa Sede, e in particolare i vescovi e i sacerdoti della zona, dovevano necessariamente prendere in considerazione non solo gli aspetti dottrinali, ma anche quelli pastorali. Questa raccolta di studi intende tra l’altro sottolineare che, per scoprire e conoscere a fondo il passato recente della Chiesa, si deve analizzare la realtà quotidiana e la specificità dei rapporti tra Chiesa e Stato nel contesto centro-europeo, senza tralasciare però i criteri della Chiesa universale, ossia quella di Roma.

What role has football (and sport in general) played in Hungarian foreign policy? Was there a continuity between the inter-war period and communism? Are foreign politics and sporting diplomacy synonyms? This book tries to provide answers to these questions through a careful examination of documents of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry and Hungarian newspapers, supplemented by documentation from several European countries. Through Hungarian football, the author traces a history of Hungary during the Age of Extremes with a special focus on the period during which sport played a particular role in Hungarian foreign policy: from 1924, the date of the Paris Olympics, the first time the country competed after World War I, to 1960, date of the Olympics of Rome. The result is a study from a particularly original perspective, highlighting, first and foremost, the transnational dimension of Hungarian football.

Throughout their shared history, Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches have lived through a very complex and sometimes tense relationship – not only theologically, but also politically. In most cases such relationships remain to this day; indeed, in some cases the tension has increased. In July 2019, scholars of both traditions gathered in Stuttgart, Germany, for an unprecedented conference devoted to exploring and overcoming the division between these churches. This book, the first in a two-volume set of the essays presented at the conference, explores historical and theological themes with the goal of healing memories and inspiring a direct dialogue between Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. Like the conference, the volume brings together representatives of these Churches, as well as theologians from different geographical contexts where tensions are the greatest. The published essays represent the great achievements of the conference: willingness to engage in dialogue, general openness to new ideas, and opportunities to address difficult questions and heal inherited wounds.

The Second Vatican Council is the single most influential event in the twentieth-century history of the Catholic Church. The book analyzes the relationship between the Council and the ?Ostpolitik? of the Vatican through the history of the Hungarian presence at Vatican II. Pope John XXIII, elected in 1958, was a catalyst. He thought that his most urgent task was to renew contacts with the Church behind the iron curtain. Hungary, too, did not consider Vatican II primarily an ecclesiastical event. It was considered a component of the negotiations between the Holy See and the K d r regime: Hungarian participation at the Council was made possible by the new pragmatic attitude in Hungarian church politics. After the crushing of the 1956 Revolution, churches in Hungary thought that the regime would last and were willing to compromise. During the Council Hungary became the experimental laboratory of the Vatican?s new eastern policy. Fej‚rdy tries to establish whether it was it a Vatican decision or a Soviet instruction.
