This is a study of the early writings of Virginio Gayda (1885-1944), a talented but amoral Italian journalist whose career spanned two world wars. A keen observer, prolific writer and propagandist during his stint as the newspaper La Stampa’s special correspondent in Habsburg Vienna, Gayda lent his considerable skills to promote an aggressive foreign policy. No one did more than he to poison relations between the Italian and Yugoslav peoples. His is the story of a respected journalist who chose an ultranationalist path to fascism and international fame. Not uninfluenced by rank careerism and material reward he forsook his roots to embrace the antisemitic “race” laws of 1938 and Italy’s disastrous partnership with Nazi Germany.

Anti-Fascism and Ethnic Minorities explores how, and to what extent, fascist ultranationalism elicited an anti-fascist response among ethnic minority communities in Eastern and Central Europe. The edited volume analyses how identities related to class, ethnicity, gender and political ideologies were negotiated within and between minorities through confrontations with domestic and international fascism. By developing and expanding the study of Jewish anti-fascism and resistance to other minority responses, the book opens the field of anti-fascism studies for a broader comparative approach. The volume is thematically located in Central and Eastern Europe, cutting right across the continent from Finland in the North to Albania in the Southeast. The case studies in the fourteen research chapters are divided into five thematic sections, dealing with the issues of 1) minorities in borderlands and cross-border antifascism, 2) minorities navigating the ideological squeeze between communism and fascism, 3) the role of intellectuals in the defence of minority rights, 4) the anti-fascist resistance against fascist and Nazi occupation during World War II, as well as 5) the conflictual role ascribed to ethnicity in post-war memory politics and commemorations. The editors describe their intersectional approach to the analysis of ethnicity as a crucial category of analysis with regard to anti-fascist histories and memories. Ben presto dal razzismo africano si passerà all'antisemitismo, e nel 1938 in pochi mesi si arriverà alle fatidiche leggi razziali che equivalsero alla morte civile per gli ebrei, banditi da scuole, luoghi di lavoro, esercito, ed espropriati delle loro attività. Tutti gli italiani ariani aderirono, dai piccoli balilla che non salutavano più i compagni, a gente comune e alti accademici che volsero le spalle agli ex amici. La bella gioventù dell'epoca (universitari, giornalisti e professionisti in erba) rappresentò l'avanguardia del razzismo fascista. Molti di loro avrebbero costituito l'ossatura della classe dirigente della Repubblica, ma quasi tutti in quel quinquennio furono contagiati dal virus antisemita. Ecco perché per circa sessant'anni c'è stata una sorta di autoassoluzione nazionale che gli storici non hanno pienamente rivisto. Per restituirci un'immagine più veritiera dell'atteggiamento della popolazione di fronte alla persecuzione dei connazionali ebrei, Avagliano e Palmieri hanno scandagliato un'enorme mole di fonti.
