Winner of the 2014 Mexican Book Prize In the middle of the twentieth century, a growing tide of student activism in Mexico reached a level that could not be ignored, culminating with the 1968 movement. This book traces the rise, growth, and consequences of Mexico's "student problem" during the long sixties (1956-1971). Historian Jaime M. Pensado closely analyzes student politics and youth culture during this period, as well as reactions to them on the part of competing actors. Examining student unrest and youthful militancy in the forms of sponsored student thuggery (porrismo), provocation, clientelism (charrismo estudiantil), and fun (relajo), Pensado offers insight into larger issues of state formation and resistance. He draws particular attention to the shifting notions of youth in Cold War Mexico and details the impact of the Cuban Revolution in Mexico's universities. In doing so, Pensado demonstrates the ways in which deviating authorities—inside and outside the government—responded differently to student unrest, and provides a compelling explanation for the longevity of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional.

Los aceleradores de partículas se han convertido en una herramienta muy poderosa para estudiar la composición de la materia, pero también han destacado como instrumentos muy útiles para un amplio espectro de aplicaciones en la medicina, en la industria, en la biología, en la geología, en la odontología, en la arqueología, en el arte, en la historia, etc. Tal es la importancia de estos aparatos en cuya construcción los países del primer mundo están invirtiendo grandes sumas de dinero. Aunque seguramente un ciudadano que vive en una ciudad industrializada no ha visto físicamente un acelerador de partículas es muy probable que haya tenido contacto con alguno de los productos tratados con aceleradores, o que haya recibido algún diagnóstico o tratamiento para atender problemas de salud. México no está exento de esta situación, a partir de la instalación del primer acelerador de partículas en la UNAM en 1952, se han comprado muchos más y se han usado no sólo para estudiar problemas de ciencia de frontera sino que han encontrado una serie de aplicaciones en diferentes áreas. Este libro, además de dar un panorama histórico sobre la física y los primeros aceleradores de partículas que hay en México, muestra varias de las aplicaciones que se han llevado a cabo en este país con la ayuda de estos costosos equipos. Algo muy importante es que da a conocer las instituciones que cuentan con recursos humanos y las instalaciones adecuadas para poner en marcha proyectos de mayor alcance que podrían beneficiar a la sociedad y a la industria mexicanas.
