La crisis que desde hace tiempo venimos padeciendo ha evidenciado las limitaciones de los paradigmas económicos tradicionales y la necesidad de un cambio. Se ha de ir más allá del paradigma que ve a las empresas privadas con fines de lucro como los únicos actores relevantes y avanzar hacia una visión pluralista que reconozca los variados papeles que las distintas formas de empresa pueden desempeñar con respecto a objetivos económicos y sociales colectivos. Por otra parte, cada vez son más las voces que sugieren que, en gran medida, han sido carencias éticas las que nos han llevado a esta difícil situación, por lo que se demanda un «rearme ético» de la economía que nos permita salir de la crisis de forma sostenible. Por lo tanto, se necesita: a) un cambio de valores en el sistema económico, para lo que podría resultar útil el recurso a la Doctrina social de la Iglesia, que desde siempre ha sostenido que entre la economía y la ética se da una necesaria relación recíproca por su común referencia al ser humano; y b) un nuevo paradigma económico, un modelo humanista de empresa, que tenga en cuenta la igual dignidad humana de todas las personas que participan en el proyecto empresarial y la empresa cooperativa encaja en ese perfil.Conjugando ambos vectores, esta obra pretende mostrar la interrelación existente entre la doctrina social cristiana y el paradigma cooperativo, claramente reflejado en el caso del cooperativismo vasco a través de la figura de D. José María Arizmendiarrieta, el alma mater de la «Experiencia Cooperativa de Mondragón», que muestra que es posible que una empresa de profundas raíces cristianas, lejos de ser una simple utopía, ofrezca resultados y pueda ser competitiva en el mercado actual. De esa forma, se abre la posibilidad de presentar al modelo cooperativo, como una posible alternativa para ese cambio, hoy tan necesario. Dra. Eba Gaminde Egia, profesora de Derecho mercantil de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Deusto desde 1997, en el campus de Bilbao. Doctora en Derecho por la Universidad de Deusto (2015, cum laude). Miembro del Equipo de Investigación Cooperativismo, Fiscalidad, Fomento y Protección laboral reconocido por el Gobierno Vasco categoría A . Desde 1994 hasta 2009 ha colaborado en la traducción de textos jurídicos al euskera en el Instituto de Estudios Vascos de la Universidad de Deusto, publicando manuales y legislación específi ca de Derecho Mercantil. Además, es autora de diversos libros, capítulos de libros y publicaciones en revistas científi cas de su área de especialización.

This is the first critical account of the internationally renowned Mondragon cooperatives of the Basque region of Spain. The Mondragon cooperatives are seen as the leading alternative model to standard industrial organization; they are considered to be the most successful example of democratic decision making and worker ownership. However, the author argues that the vast scholarly and popular literature on Mondragon idealizes the cooperatives by falsely portraying them as apolitical institutions and by ignoring the experiences of shop floor workers. She shows how this creation of an idealized image of the cooperatives is part of a new global ideology that promotes cooperative labor-management relations in order to discredit labor unions and working-class organizations; this constitutes what she calls the "myth" of Mondragon.
