La construcción de imágenes divinas tuvo un punto de partida importante en los seres que rodearon al hombre en el principio de los tiempos. De todos ellos, los animales, con atributos imposibles de rivalizar, ofrecieron la posibilidad de construir las formas que soñaron nuestros antepasados. Nadie podía volar como el cóndor, desplazarse y atacar con la elegancia de un puma o aparecer súbitamente como la serpiente. Son éstos y otros miembros de la fauna andina los que encendieron la imaginación del misterioso redactor del Manuscrito de Huarochirí. Este documento, "pequeña biblia regional" como lo llamó Arguedas, sigue siendo el único texto sagrado, conservado en quechua, que relata la saga de los dioses, animales y los hombres antes de la llegada de los europeos. Que así sea, no debe sorprendernos, otros libros sacros como Gilgamesch, el Génesis o el Popol Vuh, glorificaron también a la fauna que poblaba los paisajes conocidos. De la misma forma, la construcción de la divinidad sumaba atributos observados en la naturaleza, para encontrar en su totalidad la imagen del dios que se buscaba. Este libro recoge el panteón andino que acompañó las aventuras de la humanidad en el amanecer de la vida, que transcurrió entre la montaña de Pariacaca y las aguas que bordean el santuario de Pachacamac.

In The Power of Huacas, Claudia Brosseder reconstructs the dynamic interaction between religious specialists and the colonial world that unfolded around them, considering how the discourse about religion shifted on both sides of the Spanish and Andean relationship in complex and unexpected ways. In The Power of Huacas, Brosseder examines evidence of transcultural exchange through religious history, anthropology, and cultural studies. Taking Andean religious specialists—or hechizeros (sorcerers) in colonial Spanish terminology—as a starting point, she considers the different ways in which Andeans and Spaniards thought about key cultural and religious concepts. Unlike previous studies, this important book fully outlines both sides of the colonial relationship; Brosseder uses extensive archival research in Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Spain, Italy, and the United States, as well as careful analysis of archaeological and art historical objects, to present the Andean religious worldview of the period on equal footing with that of the Spanish. Zwischen Königskordillere und Titicacasee, auf der andinen Hochebene des heutigen Bolivien, liegt der Ort Carabuco. Bereits vor der Ankunft der Spanier galt diese Region mit ihrer sakralisierten Natur als religiöses und mythologisches Zentrum der andinen Kulturen. Mit der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft und der Christianisierung der indigenen Bevölkerung entstanden hier transkulturelle Kontaktzonen, in denen religiöses Wissen neu verhandelt wurde. Carabuco wurde zu einer wichtigen Kultstätte, da hier der Legende nach bereits in vorspanischer Zeit ein christlicher Apostel ein wundertätiges Kreuz errichtet hatte, das bis heute als Reliquie verehrt wird. Das Buch geht den komplexen Dynamiken religiöser Kommunikation im Carabuco des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts nach. Indem es die transkulturelle Bedeutung so unterschiedlicher Medien wie Bilder, Texte, Objekte, Architekturen und mündliche Überlieferungen für diese Prozesse beleuchtet, eröffnet es neue Perspektiven auf die Kulturgeschichte des Andenraums. Astrid Windus ist Privatdozentin für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte und Wissensgeschichte an der Universität Siegen. Die Schwerpunkte ihrer durch Interdisziplinarität geprägten Forschung liegen im Bereich der lateinamerikanischen Kultur- und Verflechtungsgeschichte, insbesondere der transkulturellen Wissensgeschichte sowie der afro-lateinamerikanischen Geschichte.
