Esiste una funzione Joyce nel romanzo italiano? È possibile rintracciare elementi e questioni che l’esperienza joyciana ha sollevato, e con cui i successivi narratori italiani hanno fatto i conti? È insomma lecito parlare di “funzione-Joyce”? Sono queste le domande da cui scaturisce questo volume. In alcuni casi è stato necessario ritornare alla prima ricezione su rivista, in altri si sono indagate l’avanguardia e la neoavanguardia, in altri casi ancora si è puntato l’occhio sugli anni Sessanta o specificamente su Gadda. Riflettere sulla “funzione Joyce” nel romanzo occidentale significa riflettere sul romanzo tout court. Joyce è al contempo un punto di arrivo e di partenza, uno snodo imprescindibile con cui è necessario fare i conti che lo si voglia o meno. Con Joyce, cioè, non cambia irreversibilmente solo il romanzo, ma anche il modo in cui l’esperienza umana può essere rappresentata e quindi narrata. Nell’osservare il fenomeno attraverso alcune letterature nazionali (francese, spagnola, irlandese e americana) e nel tentare di isolare l’intorno teorico-formale di questa “funzione”, i saggi qui raccolti rendono testimonianza di come gli scrittori “post-Joyce” si siano misurati con questa eredità talvolta percepita come impossibile, altre volte come stimolante, spesso come castrante, ma anche, sorprendentemente, come liberatoria.Questa molteplicità di prospettive, che non ambisce certo a “risolvere” la funzione, invita a riflettere sulla portata epocale della trasformazione/rigenerazione operata da Joyce nella narrativa occidentale.

Temporalities of Modernism gathers fourteen scholars whose contributions readdress the very tenets of modernism by approaching its multifaceted relationship with time in a series of fresh and original essays. The contemporary energies behind the collection are rooted in the turbulence of the modernist age: relativity, irreversibility, duration, fragmentation, contingency, and the looming threat of the apocalyptic future. The collection includes geographical areas often neglected by the habitual reduction of modernist studies to English-speaking literary high modernism, or to the concentration of famous figures in the traditional capital of modernism—Paris. Thus it offers detailed presentations of Italian pre-WWI modernism, Czech Dadaism, or of Polish, Romanian, and Hungarian writers and artists. The borders also open in terms of genres and mediums, as the contributions are not limited to fiction, but examine the multi-faceted productions of modernist artists: poetry, theatre, painting, music, cinema, photography, etc. In addition, the limits are temporally stretched out as some contributions focus on more recent writers (such as Sylvia Plath) and their reactivation of modernist discoveries.

The Author in Criticism:Italo Calvino’s Authorial Image in Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom explores the cultural and historic patterns and differences in the critical readings of Italian author Italo Calvino’s works in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Italy. It considers the external factors that contribute to create recognizable patterns in the readings of Calvino’s texts in different contexts. This volume therefore covers, most notably, matters of genre (science fiction, postmodernism), cultural perceptions and conventions, the (re)current image of the author in different media, academic schools, -curricula and -canons, biographical information (such as gender and background), and translation and the language in which the author speaks (or fails to speak) to us. It traces the influence of these aspects in the academic discourse on Calvino. The Author in Criticism also analyzes Calvino’s various professional roles as writer, editor, essayist, journalist, private correspondent, and public, cosmopolitan intellectual, reappraising their often little acknowledged importance for academic criticism. An important underlying idea is that the preconceived image that every critic has of Calvino before even opening one of his books is often solidified and repeated even in the most refined and complex critical analyses. This volume purposefully foregrounds the textual and non-textual parts that are usually considered peripheral to the works of an author, such as book covers, blurbs, reviews, talks, interviews, etc. In this way, this book provides insight into the reception of Calvino’s works in different countries.
