Riflettere sulla “funzione Joyce” nel romanzo occidentale significa riflettere sul romanzo tout court. Joyce è al contempo un punto di arrivo e di partenza, uno snodo imprescindibile con cui è necessario fare i conti che lo si voglia o meno. Con Joyce, cioè, non cambia irreversibilmente solo il romanzo, ma anche il modo in cui l’esperienza umana può essere rappresentata e quindi narrata. Nell’osservare il fenomeno attraverso alcune letterature nazionali (francese, spagnola, irlandese e americana) e nel tentare di isolare l’intorno teorico-formale di questa “funzione”, i saggi qui raccolti rendono testimonianza di come gli scrittori “post-Joyce” si siano misurati con questa eredità talvolta percepita come impossibile, altre volte come stimolante, spesso come castrante, ma anche, sorprendentemente, come liberatoria.Questa molteplicità di prospettive, che non ambisce certo a “risolvere” la funzione, invita a riflettere sulla portata epocale della trasformazione/rigenerazione operata da Joyce nella narrativa occidentale.

Temporalities of Modernism gathers fourteen scholars whose contributions readdress the very tenets of modernism by approaching its multifaceted relationship with time in a series of fresh and original essays. The contemporary energies behind the collection are rooted in the turbulence of the modernist age: relativity, irreversibility, duration, fragmentation, contingency, and the looming threat of the apocalyptic future. The collection includes geographical areas often neglected by the habitual reduction of modernist studies to English-speaking literary high modernism, or to the concentration of famous figures in the traditional capital of modernism—Paris. Thus it offers detailed presentations of Italian pre-WWI modernism, Czech Dadaism, or of Polish, Romanian, and Hungarian writers and artists. In the first pages of the Zibaldone, Leopardi had noted that the "love of learning" induces a passion for philosophy, making it a foundational element of modern culture. In this perspective, then, no doubt remains as to the prominent position of Voltaire's Candide, or of Rousseau's thought, which combines philosophical thinking, educational demands, political passion and autobiography. However, in order to move from the count to the novel, from the apologue and from the treatises to complex characters who also maintain a strong and speculative allure, one had to leave the 18th century, experience Romanticism, feed the rêveries of the new promeneurs solitaires during the following century, with the restlessness and the questions of Dostoevsky, Kafka, Sartre, Camus, and of Pirandello, Proust, Musil and many others; of those who combined the passion for short stories with the unmasking of any deceptive theodicy. Bringing the the novel back to bourgeois intertwining and existential anxieties, starting from Cervantes's ironic way of thinking. In the absence of declarations, however, where does one find the evidence of the presence of the philosophique in the novel, or how does one identify texts pertaining to the definition of roman philosophique? Ogni racconto rappresenta gli eventi guardandoli da un certo punto di vista. I lettori per lo più non ne sono consapevoli, ma essi sono obbligati dal testo a vedere solo certe cose e da una certa posizione. In prima approsimazione, le narrazioni ci mettono di fronte a un fenomeno simile a quello che accade quando guardiamo un film: non vediamo la cinepresa, ma percepiamo nettamente il luogo invisibile in cui essa è collocata. Il volume mette anzitutto a fuoco la questione del punto di vista in tutta la sua complessità teorica. In un testo narrativo, infatti, non c'è soltanto un punto di vista materiale (percettivo), ma c'è anche un punto di vista ideologico, che orienta la selezione delle parole, e più in generale, che organizza tutto il racconto, a diversi livelli. Scopriamo così che ogni racconto nasce dall'intrecciarsi di vari punti di vista, spesso non coincidenti: quello dell'autore, quello del narratore, quelli dei personaggi, e altri ancora. Nella seconda parte Turchetta mostra, analizzando alcuni testi, come molta narrativa del Novecento dal verismo ai giorni nostri, si sia sforzata di rendere la complessità del reale adottando, in vari modi, il punto di vista di qualcuno che capisce poco. Che è poi forse quello che accade quasi sempre nella vita di tutti i giorni, un po' a tutti noi.
