Premier organisme de production d'images officielles en Europe, la section photographique de l'armée (SPA) est créée en 1915 pour fabriquer jusqu’en 1919 l’image officielle de la guerre en France. L’exposition présentée à la Sorbonne restitue une partie de ce fonds à travers des vues qui n’ont jamais eu le droit de paraître. Censurées dès leur production, pour des raisons stratégiques ou diplomatiques, elles ont toutefois été inventoriées et conservées. Ce catalogue présente une sélection de ces images interdites à la diffusion pendant la Grande Guerre. Plus, historiens et sémiologues proposent des analyses individuelles. Chaque image révèle des informations devant restées secrètes aux contemporains de la guerre. Quelles sont-elles ? Quel est l'intérêt de l'Etat ? Quelles sont ces images, dont la révélation mettrait en péril la France en guerre ? Autour de la sélection sont également proposés des éléments nécessaires à sa compréhension : les conditions de production, l’existence parallèle de la section cinématographique de l’armée, le matériel utilisé, l'origine des photographes mais aussi des reproductions d'archives comme les livres de censure, les fiches rédigées par les opérateurs.

Aerial Propaganda and the Wartime Occupation of France, 1914-1918 explores the combined role played by the French and British Governments and Armies in creating and distributing millions of aerial newspapers and leaflets aimed at the French population trapped behind German lines. Drawing on extensive research and French, German and British primary sources, the book highlights a previously unknown aspect of psychological warfare that challenges the established interpretation that the occupied populations lived in a state of total isolation and that the Allied governments had no desire to provide them with morale support. Instead a very different picture emerges from this study, which demonstrates that aerial propaganda not only played a fundamental role in raising morale in the occupied territories but also fuelled resistance and clandestine publications. This book demonstrates that the existing historiographical portrayal of the occupied civilian as an uninformed victim must be replaced by a more nuanced interpretation.

Tucked away in a garden on the edge of Paris is a multimedia archive like no other: Albert Kahn's Archives de la Planète (1908-1931). Kahn's vast photo-cinematographic experiment preserved world memory through the privileged lens of everyday life, and Counter-Archive situates this project in its biographic, intellectual, and cinematic contexts. Tracing the archive's key influences, such as the philosopher Henri Bergson, the geographer Jean Brunhes, and the biologist Jean Comandon, Paula Amad maps an alternative landscape of French cultural modernity in which vitalist philosophy cross-pollinated with early film theory, documentary film with the avant-garde, cinematic models of temporality with the early Annales school of history, and film's appropriation of the planet with human geography and colonial ideology. At the heart of the book is an insightful meditation upon the transformed concept of the archive in the age of cinema and an innovative argument about film's counter-archival challenge to history.
