Secondo Saussure, il primo grande gruppo di compiti della linguistica è descrivere strutture, evoluzioni, parentele, tipi del maggior numero possibile di lingue, offrendone analisi sincroniche, diacroniche, funzionali, ma anche correlandole ai fenomeni sociali e culturali propri delle società entro cui e per cui le lingue vivono.
