This book explores the history of interdisciplinary relationships between archaeology and other branches of knowledge in Europe and elsewhere. This is a largely untold history that needs to be unpacked. This book brings to light some of the events leading towards interdisciplinary relations in archaeology from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. It encompasses ten scholarly contributions that offer a critical overview of this complex, dynamic and long-lasting transformative process. This is a pioneering project in the field of the history of archaeology, as it is the first to examine the inclusion into archaeological practice of various disciplines categorized under the umbrella of hard, natural and social sciences, as well as the humanities. The authors of this volume include internationally acknowledged scholars of the history of archaeology, such as Margarita Díaz-Andreu, Nathan Schlanger and Oscar Moro, as well as other well-established authors in the field from Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Switzerland. The chapters cover a wide range of topics. Several of them deal with interdisciplinarity in archaeology on a more general level by analysing its relationship with other sciences in specific countries. Other chapters discuss the incorporation of disciplines such as palynology and zoology into archaeology, either on a wider scale or using certain countries as case studies. Some authors focus on the work of scholars as starting points for examining the intersection between antiquarianism, archaeology, the natural sciences and numismatics, while others theorize on the influence of epistemology and philosophy of science on archaeological theory and practice. Finally, the influence of the army is also discussed in the development of archaeology.

This Handbook provides a transnational reference point for critical engagements with the legacies of, and futures for, global archaeological collections. It challenges the common misconception that museum archaeology is simply a set of procedures for managing and exhibiting assemblages. Instead, this volume advances museum archaeology as an area of reflexive research and practice addressing the critical issues of what gets prioritized by and researched in museums, by whom, how, and why. Through twenty-eight chapters, authors problematize and suggest new ways of thinking about historic, contemporary, and future relationships between archaeological fieldwork and museums, as well as the array of institutional and cultural paradigms through which archaeological enquiries are mediated. Case studies embrace not just archaeological finds, but also archival field notes, photographic media, archaeological samples, and replicas. Throughout, museum activities are put into dialogue with other aspects of archaeological practice, with the aim of situating museum work within a more holistic archaeology that does not privilege excavation or field survey above other aspects of disciplinary engagement. These concerns will be grounded in the realities of museums internationally, including Latin America, Africa, Asia, Oceania, North America, and Europe. In so doing, the common heritage sector refrain 'best practice' is not assumed to solely emanate from developed countries or European philosophies, but instead is considered as emerging from and accommodated within local concerns and diverse museum cultures.

Sono ormai numerosi gli studi sulla ricezione dell’opera di Darwin da parte del mondo culturale dell’Ottocento, in particolare la sua influenza sul pensiero religioso. Da qualche tempo anche l’Italia è divenuta oggetto d’interesse: il darwinismo, il primo grande confronto scientifico-culturale seguito all’unificazione, colse il neonato Stato italiano nel pieno dell’impegno a costruire al suo interno una coesione sociale, in cui la cultura scientifica giocasse un ruolo centrale e surrogasse il collante di quella cattolica. È ancora gravemente miope, purtroppo, lo sguardo degli storici verso l’“altro cristianesimo” che in quegli anni si stava affermando in Italia: si tratta di quel complesso di movimenti di riforma evangelica che agitavano il nostro Paese e che, in simbiosi con il processo risorgimentale, aspiravano a superare lo Stato confessionale cattolico e a plasmare, attraverso l’educazione e il rinnovamento morale, le masse popolari e i nuovi cittadini italiani. Il volume si propone di superare questo deficit storiografico, indagando la pubblicistica evangelica del periodo e narrando, per la prima volta, il difficile confronto del protestantesimo italiano con la scienza dell’evoluzione: contrariamente all’opinione comune, in Italia si sviluppò un articolato dibattito filosofico e teologico, che attinse a informazioni scientifiche di prima mano e produsse una pluralità di opzioni, rivelandoci un affascinante, e ancora inedito, spaccato di storia del pensiero in Italia.

Non diciamo ‘globale’ perché, come lo stesso Mannoni sosteneva negli ultimi anni, il termine può dare un’idea sbagliata: di chi eccede in ambizione, non riconosce la complessità dei problemi storici, confonde la propria ricerca con il tutto.
