Frente a Montaigne, quien comparte con Platón las reticencias que el filósofo había expresado ante la escritura, Quevedo nos enseña que, gracias a ésta y a la imprenta, las grandes almas pueden lograr la pervivencia. Adelantando una genuina fenomenología de la modernidad, el poeta español afirma que la imprenta es la docta heroína que libra del olvido a los que siendo sabios no merecen morir, y con los que, gracias a ella, se puede, para siempre, vivir en auténtica conversación, pues los libros «al sueño de la vida hablan despiertos». En el presente ensayo Darío Villanueva analiza la génesis textual y la forma poética de la composición de Quevedo, la inserta en la tradición de origen estoico que ensalza el valor de la sabiduría como vencedora del tiempo, y reivindica desde ella una «poética de la lectura» que puede consistir en el conjunto de principios o reglas que los textos contienen, de forma más o menos explícita, a fin de ser leídos en condiciones óptimas y con el mejor acierto hermenéutico.
