Excerpt from La Prononciation du Latin Le souci du vrai, voilà l'argument le plus haut et le meilleur pour la réforme. Notre prononciation scolaire est à rectifier pour diverses raisons utilitaires sans doute, mais aussi et surtout par probité. Il y a là, comme l'a justement dit M. Sécheresse, une question de conscience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation and the Latin Alphabet Our Object, in these pages has been to review this important work at full length, and, at the same time, to give to the English students who have no access to the original work, a clear and succinct statement Of all the results at which Mr. Corssen has arrived, so far as they have reference to the language itself, and excluding the part on quantity. At the close Of our work, we institute a comparison between the Latin language, as pronounced by the Romans themselves, and our Latin scholars in America and Great Britain. Excerpt from A Few Remarks on the Pronunciation of Latin I have a sufficient knowledge of the ordinary Scotch method and care for no contradiction however fiat. If in Edinburgh or elsewhere any pursue a superfine system, acceptable alike to gods and men, to Spaniard, Italian and ancient Roman, that is not Scotch, but some ideal which common mortals would fain attain to, but cannot. Excerpt from The Three Pronunciations of Latin For more than a score of years, my time has been spent in the class-room in the Department of Latin. Thousands of young men, within the period named, have received their training, to some extent, at least, at my hands. Many of these, in their labors as teachers, have under their care the ancient languages. Inquiries as to methods of teaching and pronunciation have become so frequent as to call for the publication of an article which might be sent to those interested, and a correspondence be thus avoided, which might otherwise prove burdensome. This state of facts will, in large part, explain the origin and elementary character of this discussion. It is natural, too, that persons engaged in teaching, adopting to some extent the modes of former instructors, should wish to know somewhat more fully the reasons which influenced those instructors in the course they were pleased to pursue. The first edition of The Three Pronunciations of Latin has been exhausted for some months past. The present enlarged edition has been brought out to a very considerable extent, from the influence of teachers and scholars in various parts of our country, whose letters on the subject manifest deep interest in the pronunciation of the Latin tongue. The hope is indulged, therefore, that the work in the form now offered, may not only tend to answer inquiries alluded to above, but also that it may not be unacceptable to teachers in general, who are engaged in giving instructions in this department of study. Excerpt from Quantity and Accent in the Pronunciation of Latin The correspondence in The Times during the past year makes it clear that we have still with us a remnant of that older race of classical scholars who were ever clamant to be let alone in their easy-going pronunciation of Latin. Yet it was their custom to pride themselves upon their accuracy, and if anyone in their hearing failed to pronounce such words as antiquus, amicus, fortuna, or imperator, with the accent on the long vowel of the penult, or tarditas, trepidus, erimis, or paries, with the accent on the antepenult, the offending person was promptly cast without the pale. They seemed to be curiously unconscious of their own amazing blunders; they would shorten the long vowels in all such words as sol, non, vox, nil, lex, lectus, rex, rectum; they would lengthen the short vowel in the accented syllable of nota, rosa, toga, volens, bene, deus, bonus, socius, hieme, societas; they frequently accented the antepenult instead of the penult in minister, facultas, libertas, excellens; and so with many other analogous words. And if they made use of the phrases bona fide or sine qua non, fide was made to rime with "tidy," and sine with "briny." Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation Enough has been said to prove how empty are the claims of those who maintain that they have recovered, in all its particulars, the exact pronunciation of the ancient Romans. Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation: A Short Exposition of the Roman Method This short manual is primarily intended for those who, being interested in the study of Latin, have accepted the Roman method of pronunciation upon the authority of the Grammars, but have either not been able to command the time to make themselves familiar with the arguments upon which this system is based, or have been repelled by the technicalities employed in treating the question from the standpoint of the specialist. It is believed that the following pages will be found to give in simple form the main facts bearing upon this interesting question; and that nothing has been introduced that is either unnecessary or obscure. For those who may wish to pursue their investigations farther after mastering these facts, a bibliography of the subject is given at the end.
