Le constat est facile a faire. Alors que des relations lexicales comme celles d'hyponomie/hyperonomie, d'antonymie, etc., ont ete abondamment traitees et occupent le haut du pave dans les traites et manuels de semantique et de lexicologie, la relation partie-tout est grandement restee la parente pauvre des etudes portant sur les structures lexicales et les grands processus d'organisation et de regulation semantiques. La plupart des manuels de lexicologie ou ne la citent guere ou n'y renvoient qu'allusivement sous le nom de meronymie (et d'holonymie) ou encore de partonymie. Et si elle affleure, plus ou moins explicitement dans des configurations discursives comme celles de l'anaphore associative ("Nous entrames dans un village. L'eglise..."), ce n'est qu'en tant qu'auxiliaire et non pas comme veritable objet d'etude. Contrairement a la logique (avec la mereologie de Lesniewski), a la philosophie du langage et au traitement automatique du langage qui lui ont accorde une place de premier plan, la linguistique jusqu'ici ne lui a guere vraiment temoigne l'attention qu'elle merite.

Despite a growing interest for space in language, most research has focused on spatial markers specifying the static or dynamic relationships among entities (verbs, prepositions, postpositions, case markings ). Little attention has been paid to the very properties of spatial entities, their status in linguistic descriptions, and their implications for spatial cognition and its development in children. This topic is at the center of this book, that opens a new field by sketching some major theoretical and methodological directions for future research on spatial entities. This monograph is the first large-scale corpus analysis of French il y a clefts. While most research on clefts focusses on the English ‘prototypical’ it-cleft and its equivalents across languages, this study examines the lesser-known il y a clefts – of both presentational-eventive and specificational type – and provides an in-depth analysis of their syntactic, semantic and discourse-functional properties. In addition to an extensive literature review and a comparison with Italian c’è clefts and with French c’est clefts, the strength of the study lies in the critical approach it develops to the common definition of clefts. Several commonly used criteria for clefts are applied to the corpus data, revealing that these criteria often lead to ambiguous results. The reasons for this ambiguity are explored, thus leading to a better understanding of what constitutes a cleft. In this sense, the analysis will be of interest to specialists of Romance and non-Romance clefts alike.

Although the interest in the concept of partitivity has continuously increased in the last decades and has given rise to considerable advances in research, the fine-grained morpho-syntactic and semantic variation displayed by partitive elements across European languages is far from being well-described, let alone well-understood. There are two main obstacles to this: on the one hand, theoretical linguistics and typological linguistics are fragmented in different methodological approaches that hinder the full sharing of cross-theoretic advances; on the other hand, partitive elements have been analyzed in restricted linguistic environments, which would benefit from a broader perspective. The aim of the PARTE project, from which this volume stems, is precisely to bring together linguists of different theoretical approaches using different methodologies to address this notion in its many facets. This volume focuses on Partitive Determiners, Partitive Pronouns and Partitive Case in European languages, their emergence and spread in diachrony, their acquisition by L2 speakers, and their syntax and interpretation.
