Pour Paul Ricœur, l’autonomie philosophique n’est possible qu’à partir d’une « reprise » de ce qui n’est pas philosophie. Francis Schmidt's works in various fields of religious studies (mainly ancient Judaism), can be characterized by three words: historiography, anthropological history, and comparatism. In that respect he placed himself in the continuation of previous French scholars, such as Maurice Halbwachs or Pierre Vidal-Naquet. Francis Schmidt also played an essential role in transmitting to a new generation of scholars the complex issues and debates concerning the Dead Sea scrolls and Qumranic research. The papers offered in this volume share all the same interest in ancient religions and the methodological devices previously mentioned. "À la suite du philosophe, on a coutume d’affirmer que dans son œuvre, Paul Ricœur a toujours séparé l’argumentation philosophique et les convictions religieuses. Remontant aux origines de sa philosophie et analysant la place de la religion dans ses grands ouvrages, la présente étude (première dans son genre en français) y discerne en réalité une laïcisation progressive, parfois ambiguë, de ses convictions religieuses, aboutissant in fine à une philosophie sans absolu, susceptible – à l’occasion de la question du mal notamment – de penser à partir de la religion, ou plus précisément de la « foi biblique ». François Hemsterhuis (1721-1790) was a Dutch philosopher on the crossroad of Enlightenment, Classicism and Romanticism. He published his treatises in French, with a beautiful lay-out. They were read and discussed immediately, by outstanding philosophers and artists like Diderot, Jacobi, Herder, Goethe, Novalis and Schleiermacher. This critical edition of Hemsterhuis’s OEuvres philosophiques, together with an early German translation, Vermischte philosophische Schriften, published in 1782-1797. François Hemsterhuis (1721-1790) war ein niederländischer Philosoph auf dem Schnittpunkt von Aufklärung, Klassizismus und Romantik. Er veröffentlichte seine Abhandlungen auf Französisch, in elegantem Layout. Bereits unmittelbar nach ihrem Erscheinen bildeten sie den Stoff zahlreicher Diskussionen unter berühmten Dichtern und Denkern wie Diderot, Jacobi, Herder, Goethe, Novalis und Schleiermacher. Die vorliegende kritische Ausgabe der Œuvres philosophiques von Hemsterhuis beinhaltet auch die zeitgenössische deutsche Übersetzung, Vermischte philosophische Schriften, die in 1782 und 1797 veröffentlicht wurde. François Hemsterhuis (1721-1790) était un philosophe néerlandais sur le carrefour des Lumières, le Néo-classicisme et le Romantisme. Il a publié ses traités en français, avec une belle mise en page. Ils ont été lus et discutés immédiatement par des philosophes et des poètes réputés comme Diderot, Jacobi, Herder, Goethe, Novalis et Schleiermacher. Cette édition critique offre des Œuvres philosophiques de Hemsterhuis, accompagnée d’une traduction allemande contemporaine, Vermischte philosophische Schriften, publiée en 1782-1797.

The present volume is a continuation of the series Contemporary Philosophy. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the present Chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophy. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the increasing contact between p- losophers from various cultures, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and in the philosophy of language and ethics, and the increasing attention being paid to the h- tory of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, are the most important contributing factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity. The surveys may therefore help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the intercultural dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft.
