Aperto da un ampio saggio introduttivo, il volume presenta una antologia ragionata delle orazioni ufficiali più significative, mettendo a disposizione del lettore una accurata galleria di note biografiche degli autori e un apparato critico di supporto all’analisi politica e culturale dei testi selezionati. Gli autori Raffaello A. Doro, dottore di ricerca in Storia d’Europa presso l’Università della Tuscia in cotutela con l’Université Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas. Si occupa storia della radio e della televisione e di propaganda politica in Italia e in Europa. Studia anche i rapporti tra integrazione europea e Mediterraneo attraverso i media. Ha pubblicato una monografia e numerosi articoli sulla storia delle radio libere in Italia e in Francia e sulle relazioni tra politica e televisione. Sante Cruciani è ricercatore in Storia delle relazioni internazionali, presso l’Università della Tuscia (Viterbo). La presente opera origina a partire da un’idea promossa dal Centro di Studi Storici Sammarinesi e rappresenta l’atto conclusivo di una prima esperienza didattica all’interno del primo corso per la formazione di personale qualificato legato al turismo e alla cultura con conoscenza del patrimonio archeologico e artistico, dell’architettura, dell’ambiente e del paesaggio sammarinesi, svoltosi a San Marino nell’anno scolastico 2013/2014. Il presente libro si configura come un manuale contenente contributi inediti e brani antologici, ed è la prima parte di un’opera che si struttura in due volumi i cui titoli sono rispettivamente: «il lungo ciclo della formazione urbana» (diviso a sua volta in due pubblicazioni: questa ed una di prossima uscita) e «modernizzazione e mutazioni antropologiche. La radicale trasformazione del territorio: tra vecchie gerarchie e nuove centralità». A fronte delle trasformazioni della città europea che ha conosciuto stagioni in cui cambiava significativamente la sua immagine, per la realtà sammarinese è sufficiente indicare pochi ma importanti momenti. Lungo ciclo si riferisce al fatto che dai primi insediamenti sul monte vi è un periodo di definizione della forma della città che muta gradualmente fino ad una sua fissazione, avvenuta dopo l’erezione dell’ultima cerchia muraria, che ci consegna una realtà congelata fino almeno alla prima metà dell’Ottocento, il periodo in cui i sammarinesi devono concretamente, per la prima volta, farsi carico della metamorfosi indotta dalla modernità.

Battle Exhortation focuses on one of the most time-honored forms of motivational communication, the encouraging speech of military commanders, to offer a pragmatic and scholarly evaluation of how persuasion contributes to combat leadership and military morale. In illustrating his subject's conventions, Yellin draws from the Bible, classical Greece and Rome, Spanish conquistadors, and American military forces.
