The Roman Republic of 1849 is one of the most exciting moment of the heroic season of the Italian Risorgimento, a short adventure in which the contemporaries recognized the opportunity to realize ideals of freedom, tolerance and democracy. This research aims to analyses the role played by religion in the political and social experiment that started in Rome after the pope’s escape, when it was necessary to redefine relations between civil and religious authorities, as well as the role of religion itself in society: a task not at all easy if applied to a State reality, where political and religious powers had been superimposed for centuries, but that will set an inescapable precedent for the subsequent attempts to build a secular State.

Dopo cinque mesi, il 3 luglio 1849, muore la Repubblica romana. Pio IX torna a Roma nell’aprile del 1850, ‘restaurato ma non libero’: è iniziata l’agonia del millenario potere temporale dei papi. Roma 1849. Incalzato dal ribellismo dei sudditi, papa Pio IX si rifugia a Gaeta e chiede l’intervento armato delle potenze cattoliche per tornare sul trono. Nel frattempo lo Stato papale si trasforma: a gennaio chiama al voto l’elettorato maschile e convoca l’assemblea costituente. Il 9 febbraio i deputati appena eletti proclamano la nascita della Repubblica romana. È un’esperienza di democrazia avanzata, che chiama a raccolta tutti i maggiori esponenti del patriottismo italiano, impegnando nella difesa volontari delle più varie tendenze ideologiche e delle più diverse provenienze geografiche. A tenerli insieme è la personalità di alcuni capi: Mazzini, per ciò che concerne il profilo politico, Garibaldi e Pisacane per l’organizzazione militare, Mameli come espressione dell’ansia di rinnovamento dell’ultima generazione. Benché raccontata tante volte dai contemporanei e fatta oggetto di molte ricerche storiche, la Repubblica romana del ’49 ha sempre qualcosa di nuovo da dire. La si è vista spesso nella sua dimensione locale, ma è la natura stessa di sede del cattolicesimo universale a metterla al centro degli interessi internazionali. Considerata come un esempio circoscritto dello spirito di rivolta dei popoli dello Stato pontificio, offre invece un punto di raccolta a rivoluzionari anche stranieri, esprime con la sua Costituzione una rilevante sapienza giuridica e propone forme nuove di violenza urbana, senza escludere le donne, chiamate per la prima volta a una presenza non solo simbolica nelle fasi più cruente della lotta. È ricerca di una patria, ma è soprattutto aspirazione alla libertà. E nuovo è anche il riformismo sociale che caratterizza l’attività di governo, causa non ultima della risolutezza con cui le potenze europee, perfino quelle non cattoliche, accettano la repressione.
