Examines the evolution of Nazi policy concerning the Final Solution in the context of the war and clarifies its ideological underpinnings. Argues that the gradual radicalization which marked Hitler's anti-Jewish policy was neither automatic nor inevitable; the various considerations that contributed to the genocide must be dissociated, and each step viewed as a separate political decision not predetermined by the previous one. Emphasizes the homology of the situations that resulted in the radicalization and, in consequence, the similarities in the rationales behind different categories of decision. Time was a constant concern for the designers of the Final Solution, and temporal aspects, in their turn, depended on technical capacities and their evaluation. The first four chapters show that the schedule mentioned by Himmler in his speech in June 1942 for exterminating all the Jews in one year was to be taken literally; he tried to force reality into this iron calendar. The following chapters discuss the various configurations (forced emigration, transfer, partial extermination, then total) of Nazi policies and the sequence of political decisions which led to the Final Solution. Includes accounts of the killings, as well as documents and testimonies.
