This volume, a sequel to Form Miming Meaning (1999), offers a selection of papers given at the second international symposium on iconicity (Amsterdam 1999). In the light of semiotic, linguistic and literary theory the studies gathered here investigate how iconicity works on all levels of language, in literary texts and other forms of verbal discourse. They investigate, among other subjects, the semiotic foundations of iconicity, the role played by iconicity in language evolution and in the way words are positioned syntactically. Special consideration is given to the iconic nature of metaphor and the 'mise en abyme', to iconically motivated punctuation and other typographic matters such as the manipulation of colour, fonts and spacing in advertising and in poetry. Other studies show how iconicity influences Shakespeare's rhetoric, the structural design of Margaret Atwood's writings and the changing fashions in fictional landscape description. Thus, these analyses of 'the motivated sign' represent yet another strong challenge to “Saussure's dogma of arbitrariness” (Jakobson).

Mantic elements are manifold in the English drama of the Renaissance period: they are supernatural manifestations and have a prophetic, future-determining function within the dramatic plot, which can be difficult to discern. Addressing contemporaries of Shakespeare, this study interprets a representative number of revenge tragedies, among them The Spanish Tragedy, The White Devil, and The Revenger's Tragedy, to draw general conclusions about the use of mantic elements in this genre. The analysis of the cultural context and the functionalisation of mantic elements in revenge tragedy of the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline era show their essential function in the construction of the plot. Mantic elements create and stimulate audience expectations. They are not only rhetoric decorum, but structural elements, and convey knowledge about the genre, the fate of which is determined by retaliation. An interpretation of revenge tragedy is only possible if mantic providentialism is taken into account.

At the end of the 18th century the English picturesque landscape garden proliferates all over Europe displacing the French formal garden. Expressing the ideas of liberty and individuality, it soon becomes a symbol of the modern concept of humankind and, accordingly, one of the most prominent and profound motifs of Romantic literature. This study examines descriptions of picturesque landscapes in the works of three eminent representatives of European Romanticism. Both Chateaubriand and Eichendorff as well as Manzoni reflect the position of modern self in a constantly changing, complex world through their use of the picturesque and it's play with perspective.

Text into Image: Image into Text is a truly interdisciplinary publication. Whilst all of the contributions focus upon the central problem of the relationship between literature and the visual arts -- one which has lost nothing of its fascination as the debate has expanded in numerous forms from antiquity into the realm of postmodern theory -- they come from contributors working in a large number of different areas. Represented are academics from the worlds of German Studies, French Studies, English Studies, Art History and Film Studies. Given their backgrounds each of the contributors can offer a different perspective upon the core issue of translation between media, but perhaps most valuable is the com-bination of perspectives made possible by the arrangement of the volume into sections dealing with aspects of the image/text debate. In the same way that the volume gains by ranging across traditional disciplinary boundaries so it also gains from dealing with a wide range of historical material from -- to take only one possible route -- Baroque icono-graphy through Romantic imagery to Expressionist agony.

Schauplatz Landschaft written by Thomas Forrer and has been published by Wallstein Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-30 with Literary Criticism categories.
