Language, Literacy, and Learning in Primary Schools is a synthesis of the findings arising from four years of policy research and development in Nigeria's primary schools that focused on the gap between what teachers should know and be able to do, and the realities of teaching and learning in classrooms. It begins by critically examining the outcomes of primary schooling as measured by learning achievement results from national assessments, and by identifying some core learning problems for Nigerian primary school children. It reviews the findings from recent research reports that studied teaching and learning processes in primary school classrooms, and it identifies the pedagogical issues in primary classrooms that contribute to poor learning achievements. This report describes a research and development program that set out to improve teaching and learning in core learning skill areas of the curriculum. This study identifies priority areas for teachers' professional development. It suggests a policy framework for the continuing professional development of primary school teachers, including the initial preparation of teachers and their induction into teaching. It proposes medium and long-term strategies to bring about the desired changes in teaching and learning through school-based approaches to teacher development.

Language and communication are essential in the classroom: essential in children’s learning, essential in teachers’ communication with children, and essential in children’s understanding of themselves and their world. This book is a guide for trainee and beginning teachers on how to support and develop talk in the classroom. It explores the theory behind the teaching of language and communication skills and includes lots of practical advice on how to translate this into the classroom. It tackles the challenges and issues of managing talk in the classroom setting, and explores the role of language in children’s learning. The book addresses the challenge of language difficulties and delayed language development among children entering school. The crucial role of adults in supporting early language development is explained, and the book also considers the needs of children for whom English is an additional language.

This book provides a unique description of teacher-pupil interaction during the Literacy Hour in good schools. It is based on detailed observations in inner-city primary schools that were recognised as effective and improving. The analysis is informed by contemporary research into the development and teaching of early literacy. The book provides practice-based examples of how teachers and schools might adapt their delivery for literacy as they move to greater creativity in their teaching of reading and writing. The analysis begins within the classrooms of three expert Key Stage 1 teachers and broadens out in to the wider setting of the schools and their senior management teams. An important theme running throughout the book is how the three teachers were able to make exceptional provision for their pupils, who were largely second language speakers and from socio-economically disadvantaged groups. The teachers’ successful practice grew from their understanding of both early literacy development and planning for individual need. The information in this book will enable student teachers, recently qualified teachers, and teachers interested in enhancing their literacy teaching to develop their practice in a similarly successful way.

Issues facing schools, teachers, and policy-makers in the expansion of elementary school instruction in modern second languages are discussed, particularly in the context of Scotland's educational system. An introductory chapter defines key terminology, the transition from pilot programs to institutionalization, and discusses briefly the distinction between "second" and "foreign" languages. The second chapter outlines five different instructional approaches and offers examples of foreign language initiatives in Scotland and elsewhere in the United Kingdom (UK), Europe, and some other countries. Objectives and difficulties encountered are examined. Several concepts in second language learning and use are considered in the third chapter, including use of language for real communication, language as a dynamic system of rules and strategies, communicative competence, "language acquisition" versus "language learning," progression of skills, and proficiency. In chapter four, evidence of instructional outcomes from UK elementary schools, immersion research, research on specific aspects of second language teaching (intensive teaching, first-language literacy, and second-to-first language transfer), and learner age is offered. A final chapter draws conclusions concerning starting age, implications of language policy for elementary language teaching, choice of approach, teacher qualifications, and implications for secondary education. Modern primary teachers must adapt literacy programmes and ensure efficient learning for all. They must also support children with language and literacy difficulties, children learning English as an additional language and possibly teach a modern foreign language. To do this effectively, they need to understand the applied linguistics research that underpins so many different areas of the language and literacy curriculum. This book illustrates the impact of applied linguistics on curriculum frameworks and pedagogy. It captures the range of applied linguistics knowledge that teachers need, and illustrates how this is framed and is used by policy makers, researchers, teacher educators and the other professions who work with teachers in schools. It considers how to effect professional development that works. It is essential reading for primary teachers but also for speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, learning support teachers and all those doing language or literacy research in the primary classroom.
