Language Use and School Performance presents the results of a study undertaken during 1969-1970 to investigate the link between language use and school performance. A basic theme of this report is that early school experience is probably the most important stage in a child's educational career. The emphasis is on the acquisition and use of language at home and in the primary school. Comprised of seven chapters, this book seeks to clarify everyday school decisions made by school personnel based on the child's performances in particular classroom and testing situations that influence his/her educational career early in life. The discussion begins by focusing on the placement of students in two kindergarten classes in two southern California school districts. More specifically, the chapter examines the practices used by teachers to assign students to classes having particular characteristics; to place them in ability groups within classes; and to promote them to the next grade. Subsequent chapters explore how teachers accomplish classroom lessons; intelligence testing as a social activity; standardized tests as objective/objectified measures of a child's "competence" in school; and tests and experiments with children. The final chapter outlines some basic theoretical issues in the assessment of the child's performance in testing and classroom settings. This monograph will be a valuable resource for educators, sociologists, and psychologists.

In conducting the research the researcher uses qualitative and quantitative approach method and sources data from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data are collected through the use of questionnaire with open-ended variables while secondary data collection is from existing literature on the project topic. Likert-type scale arranged in order of "very significantly", "significantly", "neutral", "insignificantly" and "very insignificantly" are used to get respondents opinion on the variables. The major research questions are: What are the effects of Nigerian Pidgin on students’ performance in English studies? Are students allowed to use Nigerian Pidgin in academic works? The general objective of the study is to find out the impact of Nigerian Pidgin on students’ performance in English studies while the hypotheses posit for the study include: Ho1: There is no significant relationship between Nigerian Pidgin and students’ performance in English Studies. Ho2: There is no significant relationship between students’ use of Nigerian Pidgin on the outcome of their academic performance. The major results of the study indicate that 94% or the respondents posits that Nigerian Pidgin affects academic performance while the test of hypothesis with a degree of freedom 4 percent indicate that there is a significant relationship between Nigerian Pidgin and students’ performance in English studies. The study recommends that the use of Nigerian Pidgin in an academic community such as Junior Secondary School Bwari, Abuja should not be encouraged. The study suggests that a more robust examination on the research topic involving other academic communities be conducted. Besides,, a comparative study on the impact of Pidgin on students’ performance in other English speaking countries should be carried out in order to investigate how its been handled.

Multilingualism enhances cognitive, neuro-linguistic and meta-linguistic development. It is proposed that improved student performance might be achieved if the U.S. educational system mainstreamed foreign language teaching as early as elementary school. The research hypothesis of this quantitative causal-comparative study was therefore that multilingual students should achieve significantly higher scores in standardized tests of basic skills relative to monolingual students. Simple random samples of 500 monolingual and 500 multilingual students in grades 5 through 8 with similar socio-economic status were drawn. There was a significant difference between the combined scores of the monolingual and multilingual students, indicating higher multilingual scores. The results of this and other studies should influence educational policy on language teaching. Urgent action is demanded from educational administrators and curriculum specialists to make foreign language teaching an integral part of the curriculum.

This study was therefore conducted primarily to assess the factors contributing to improvement in academic performance of Junior High Students (JHS) in a Basic School which is in the Gomo-East District in the Central Region of Ghana. The mixed and descriptive research design was used and a sample size of 87 respondents (79 students and 8 teachers) were selected through random sampling technique. The findings revealed that the average academic performance (47.0%) of the JHS students in the Basic School is weak and their performance in Mathematics (average score of 31.48%) and English Language (average score of 39.99%) is a fail. It was noticed that student factors that contribute to an improvement in academic performance include; regular studying, self-motivation, punctuality and regular class attendance, hard-work and interest in a subject. The teacher factors were completion of syllabus, use of TLM’s, frequent feedback to students and given students special attention. Per the findings, parent factors which was very key was parent showing concern in their children’s academics and providing them their academic needs. School factors that were significant included availability of text books and TLM’s. The study also found that parent level of education and gender has a positive relationship with academic performance but it’s insignificant. However, age has a positive significant (5% significance level) relationship with academic performance. Based on findings, the study recommends that there should be strict monitoring on teachers to vary their teaching methods to suit their needs of the students and also to provide the students with constant feedback on their academic performance. Again, the students should be motivated and orientated to take ownership of their studies by having regular studies and attending school during school days.

Research proved that teaching styles can make or break the learning process. Hence, performance of learners must be geared towards a learning environment that is engaging, enjoyable and fruitful. Anchored on Invitational Theory, Cognitive Abilities Theory and Sociocultural Theory, this study sought to determine the teaching styles of grade 7 teachers and its relationship to the variation of language performance of grade 7 learners of Iligan City National High School. A Descriptive -correlational method was employed. To obtain the needed data, Teaching Styles Questionnaire for Teachers was administered to 9 Grade 7 English teachers and Module 1 Pre /Post-test from K-12 English Learners Material were administered to 971 grade 7 learners. Findings revealed that dominant teaching style used were discussion, reflective and discovery methods. Though usage of other teaching styles came to the surface but there is no variation of teaching styles occurred resulting to a relatively low language performance. This volume focuses on a case where community organizing, academic research and governmental responsibility were successfully mobilized and synchronized to bring about change in educational policy and practice. The focus of this book is the methodology implemented and the results obtained over the course of a year-long action research project on language and education in St. Eustatius, one of the islands of the Dutch Caribbean, commissioned by the educational authorities in both St. Eustatius and the European Netherlands. On the island, the language of instruction is Dutch, however, outside of the classroom most students only speak English and an English-lexifier Creole. The research project was set up to address the negative impact on school success of this disparity. It included a community-based sociolinguistic study that actively involved all of the stakeholders in the education system on the island. This was complemented by a multi-pronged set of research strategies, including a language attitude and use survey, a narrative proficiency test, in depth interviews, and a review of the relevant literature. The resulting report and recommendations were accepted by the government, which is now in the process of changing the language of instruction.

The place of native and non-native speakers in the role of English teachers has probably been an issue ever since English was taught internationally. Although ESL and EFL literature is awash, in fact dependent upon, the scrutiny of non-native learners, interest in non-native academics and teachers is fairly new. Until recently, the voices of non-native speakers articulating their own concerns have been even rarer. This book is a response to this notable vacuum in the ELT literature, providing a forum for language educators from diverse geographical origins and language backgrounds. In addition to presenting autobiographical narratives, these authors argue sociopolitical issues and discuss implications for teacher education, all relating to the theme of non-native educators in ETL. All of the authors are non-native speakers of English. Some are long established professionals, whereas others are more recent initiates to the field. All but one received part of the higher education in North America, and all except two of the chapters are at least partially contextualized in North America. Particularly relevant for non-native speakers who aspire to enter the profession, graduate students in TESOL programs, and teacher educators, the unique nature of this book's contributors and its contents will interest researchers and professionals in applied linguistics generally and in ELT, and all those who are concerned with the role of non-native speakers in English-language teaching.
