Society is characterized by a constant flow of multimodal products, which increasingly blur the lines between screen and reality, and audiovisual translation allows overcoming geographical and linguistic frontiers between small realities across the planet. However, research has long struggled to adapt its methodologies to effectively analyze such phenomena, and even more to scale its results through larger corpus analyses. Dora Renna proposes a pioneering framework, informed by the latest trends in audiovisual translation and multimodality and fit to achieve the complex task of operatively including multimodality in a rigorous corpus analysis of source and target versions of films characterized by language variation as a key element of character design. While language is at the core of her analysis, its role in the broader audiovisual context is explored thanks to a solid network of relations that shed light on linguistic and translational choices as well as on their implications. Framework and methodology are explained in detail and thoroughly applied to the case study to show how this perspective contributes to move a step forward in corpus-based audiovisual translation studies. The results obtained are unexpected and urge readers to overcome old attitudes towards audiovisual translation and multimodal corpora.

Multimodality is an increasingly important area in applied linguistics and has begun to play a pivotal role in the act of communication. With the expansion of digital technology, the multimodal approach has also been applied to audiovisual translations with a special emphasis on subtitles. This study was designed to investigate the interplay between verbal and multimodal modes, i.e., semiotic, visual, acoustic, and kinetic, and to determine to what extent this interaction affects film subtitles. It is thus highly significant to assess when it is justifiable for a translator to obviate the original soundtrack in film subtitles when the same message is conveyed with the help of semiotic and multimodal modes other than language. The study also examines the influence of multimodal modes on humor translation and their impact on the humorous effect in a film. To investigate this issue selected scenes of the British sitcom 'Fawlty Towers' will be analyzed with its Polish subtitles. The thesis is a cross-linguistic, multimodal study that can be considered as the next step in the evolution of subtitles and is aimed at all of those who want to delve into the world of audiovisual translation

Recently, research in the Humanities is showing an increasing interest in exactly how language and other semiotic resources support each other. The eighteen articles of this book focus on the interplay between spoken language and other modalities and address a spectrum of cross-modal resources and their functions. They also discuss how multimodal resources are exploited to increase communicative effectiveness and broaden accessibility to knowledge. This is illustrated with examples from discourse types including dramatic, literary and audiovisual texts, Facebook communication and chats, comics and audio-guides. The volume will be of interest to scholars of linguistics, translation studies, museology and education, and for readers interested in the wide array of possibilities that multimodal texts open up for meaning-making.

This volume offers a selection of issues currently encountered by scholars working within the broadly understood discipline of Translation Studies. The contributions here discuss topical and recurrent issues, which have long been at the forefront of this discipline, such as phraseology, corpora, quality of interpreting, translator training, censorship, style, proper names, and receptor-oriented translation. In addition, they also deal with relatively recent developments, such as humour and multimodality in audiovisual translation, and those problems rarely conclusively addressed in the context of translation, namely impoliteness and paratexts. Bringing together authors from eight countries, namely the UK, Spain, Germany, Austria, Poland, Italy, the USA and New Zealand, the volume offers research into translation from a variety of methodological solutions and conducted across eight languages (English, Spanish, Catalan, Polish, German, Italian, Chinese and Greek). Despite the diversity of themes presented, the main research areas emerging from all the contributions fall into four thematic groups: (1) lexicological issues and corpora in translation studies; (2) quality and translator training; (3) audiovisual translation; and (4) literary translation.

New Trends in Audiovisual Translation is an innovative and interdisciplinary collection of articles written by leading experts in the emerging field of audiovisual translation (AVT). In a highly accessible and engaging way, it introduces readers to some of the main linguistic and cultural challenges that translators encounter when translating films and other audiovisual productions. The chapters in this volume examine translation practices and experiences in various countries, highlighting how AVT plays a crucial role in shaping debates about languages and cultures in a world increasingly dependent on audiovisual media. Through analysing materials which have been dubbed and subtitled like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Forrest Gump, The Simpsons or South Park, the authors raise awareness of current issues in the study of AVT and offer new insights on this complex and vibrant area of the translation discipline.

Subtitling films in another language becomes especially complex when the original language deviates from its standard form. Films that feature non-standard pronunciation, dialects or other varieties of language, especially when juxtaposed with more standard uses, are said to display «linguistic variation». As language use is central to characters' identities and to a film's plot, it is essential to retain the source language (SL) specificity as fully as possible in the target language (TL) subtitles so the target audience can experience the film as authentically as possible. Given its considerable difficulty, subtitling in this manner is often advised against, avoided or, when attempted, subjected to considerable criticism. This book focuses on a collection of British and French films selected for the range of approaches that they adopt in portraying linguistic variation. Each chapter explores the challenges posed by the subtitling of such linguistic difference in the given films and the corresponding solutions offered by their subtitlers. Drawing on these findings and referring to contemporary thinking in the field of translation studies, this book argues that with insight and skill, linguistic variation can be preserved in film subtitles.

The exponential growth of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) in the last three decades has consolidated its place as an area of study within Translation Studies (TS). However, AVT is still a young domain currently exploring a number of different lines of inquiry without a specific methodological and theoretical framework. This volume discusses the advantages and drawbacks of ten approaches to AVT and highlights the potential avenues opened up by new methods. Our aim is to jumpstart the discussion on the (in)adequacy of the methodologies imported from other disciplines and the need (or not) for a conceptual apparatus and framework of analysis specific to AVT. This collective work relates to recent edited volumes that seek to take stock on research in AVT, but it distinguishes itself from those publications by promoting links in what is now a very fragmented field. Originally published as a special issue of Target 28:2 (2016).
