The last few decades have seen a stretching and exchange of local, regional and national languages, identities, cultures, and economies worldwide as a consequence of globalisation and technology development. Significantly, the languages of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia have been attracting increasing strategic, commercial and civic attention. Collectively referred to as ‘Languages of the Wider World’ (LWW), these languages are important given the emergence of new centres of capital and cultural accumulation in the 21st century, such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs). This volume focuses on LWW in use, and on their teaching and learning. It ranges from a highly localized focus (on learners and teachers of Community/Heritage Languages), to broader national and international foci (on policy makers and multilingualism; on teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary systems). It aims to inspire researchers and practitioners to work on languages other than the ones that have been the mainstay of the field to facilitate the development of a vibrant and critical community of enquiry in Languages of the Wider World. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Language Learning Journal.

What is the future of languages in an increasingly globalized world? Are we moving toward the use of a single language for global communication, or are there ways of managing language diversity at the international level? Can we, or should we, maintain a balance between the global need to communicate and the maintenance of local and regional identities and cultures? What is the role of education, of language rights, of language equality in this volatile global linguistic mix? A group of leading scholars in sociolinguistics and language policy examines trends in language use across the world to find answers to these questions and to make predictions about likely outcomes. Highlighted in the discussion are, among other issues, the rapidly changing role of English, the equally rapid decline and death of small languages, the future of the major European languages, the international use of constructed languages like Esperanto, and, not least, the question of what role applied scholarship can and should play in mapping and influencing the future.

Teaching World Languages for Social Justice: A Sourcebook of Principles and Practices offers principles based on theory, and innovative concepts, approaches, and practices illustrated through concrete examples, for promoting social justice and developing a critical praxis in foreign language classrooms in the U.S. and in wider world language communities. For educators seeking to translate these ideals into classroom practice in an environment dominated by the current standards movement and accountability measures, the critical insights on language education offered in this text will be widely welcomed. The text is designed as a sourcebook for translating theory into practice. Each chapter includes the theoretical base, guidelines for practice, discussion of the relationship to existing practices in the world language classroom, suggestions for activity development (which can be integrated into a professional portfolio), illustrative examples, questions for reflection, and additional suggested readings. Teaching World Languages for Social Justice is a primary or supplementary text for second and foreign language teaching methods courses and is equally appropriate for graduate courses in language education or educational studies.
