116 variations caractéristiques du changement linguistique au 16ème siècle, en graphie, morphologie, morphosyntaxe, syntaxe et en lexique, ont été étudiées séparément puis comparées afin de dégager les tendances saillantes du changement linguistique au 16ème s. et de définir à partir de quelle norme le français actuel a pu être élaboré. Plusieurs synthèses ont été faites, selon l'état d'avancement du changement au début ou à la fin de la période étudiée (1530-1659), mais également selon les genres textuels, les types d'évolution ou selon les auteurs. Le corpus est formé de textes littéraires de poésie (Marot, Du Bellay, Ronsard, Viau et Scarron), de prose (Rabelais, M. de Navarre, D. Sauvage, Fouquelin, Montaigne, D'Aubigné, Descartes et Bossuet) et de théâtre (Jodelle, Garnier, Montchrestien, Du Ryer et Corneille). Les éditions, en général princeps, ont été validées par une vérification dans les manuscrits d'origine ou n'ont pas été prises en compte dans les études graphiques.
