Čtveřice autorů prezentuje první rozsáhlejší pokus o mapování vztahů Československa a Latinské Ameriky v období studené války. Vzhledem k tomu, že doposud není k dispozici sekundární literatura (s výjimkou nedávných časopiseckých studií a velmi omezeného počtu publikací starších), je práce opřena téměř výlučně o pramenný materiál, zejména z Archivu Ministerstva zahraničních věcí, Národního archivu a Archivu bezpečnostních složek. Výzkum ukázal různou intenzitu zájmu československých politických a ekonomických elit o jednotlivé země regionu, preferována byla Brazílie, Argentina, Mexiko a po roce 1959 Kuba. Současně je také patrná pragmatizace čs. zahraniční politiky, formálně byly sice zdůrazňovány politické a ideologické priority, v praxi však udržovalo Československo výhodně ekonomické vztahy i s brutálními vojenskými režimy (zvláště s Argentinou).

Kolektivní monografie Las relaciones entre Europa Latina y América Latina 1945–1989 přináší studie patnácti českých a zahraničních autorů, kteří se zabývají vztahy střední Evropy a Latinské Ameriky v období studené války. Celý text je svědectvím proměny v důrazu studia studené války v posledních letech. Tradičním objektem zájmu tohoto období byly vztahy mezi USA a SSSR; dnes se zájem přesouvá na problematiku vzájemných vztahů států či celých regionů z táborů obou supermocností, v daném případě evropských vazalů Sovětského svazu a Latinské Ameriky. Z pochopitelných důvodů je věnována velká pozornost vztahům střední Evropy a Kuby, která se stala po roce 1959 sovětským předmostím na západní hemisféře. The monograph Las relaciones entre Europa Latina y América Latina 1945–1989 presents essays written by fifteen Czech and foreign scholars who focus on relations between Central Europe and Latin America during the Cold War. The book is evidence of the changes in the focus of Cold War study in recent years. Traditionally, the main focus of this period was the relations between the USA and the USSR, while at the present time interest has shifted to mutual relations between countries and entire regions from the "camps” of the two superpowers, in this case the Soviet Union’s European vassals and Latin America. Understandably, relations between Central Europe and Cuba, which became a Soviet beachhead on the western hemisphere after 1959, have received the most extensive attention.

Most of the world knows Uruguay only for its soccer team, or its vaunted title as the "Switzerland of South America," an enduring moniker given to the country for its earlier social welfare policies and relative stability. Even many scholarly narratives of Latin America fail to integrate the country into historical accounts, reducing the country to, as one historian has explained, "a periphery within the periphery that is Latin America." This volume challenges that characterization, taking one of the most innovative small states in the region and analyzing its transnational influence on the world. Uruguay in Transnational Perspective takes a broad look at the country’s three-hundred-year history, connecting imperial practices and resistance, Afro-Latin movements, and feminist firebrands, among others to understand how the country and its citizens have influenced and shaped regional and global historical narratives in a way that has thus far been overlooked. This book addresses the relations between Central Europe and Latin America. The scholars primarily focus on the 20th century when contacts between these regions spread and diversified significantly. While in the 19th century, Latin American countries were merely a destination for central European travelers and occasionally emigrants, after World War I, tens of thousands of people came from Central Europe followed by political exiles during World War II. The 1959 events in Cuba were another impulse for the development of these relations, marking the contacts of both regions in political, economic and cultural spheres.

V období mezi světovými válkami se nadále posilovaly vztahy mezi střední Evropou a Latinskou Amerikou. Zejména Československu se otevíraly nové možnosti pro výhodnou hospodářskou spolupráci. Latinská Amerika se stala významným odbytištěm pro průmyslové výrobky a zároveň dodavatelem surovin pro československý průmysl. Autoři publikace popisují tyto rozvíjející se (nejen) ekonomické vztahy s důrazem na styky s Argentinou, která byla v meziválečných desetiletích pro československé exportéry a importéry nejvýznamnějším obchodním partnerem v regionu. Zaměřují se také na oblast politickou (například na aktivity Mexika) a věnují pozornost i obrazu Latinské Ameriky v cestopisech českých autorů. The relationship between Central Europe and Latin America further strengthened in the period between the wars. New possibilities for profitable economic cooperation opened up particularly for Czechoslovakia as Latin America became an important market for industrial products, while at the same time being a supplier of raw materials for Czechoslovak industry. The scholars describe these developing economic and other relationships emphasizing those with Argentina, which was the most prominent trade partner in the region for Czechoslovak exporters and importers in the interwar period. They also focus on the political area (e.g., activities of Mexico) and explore the image of Latin America in the travelogues written by Czech authors.
