This book compares the cultures of the different social groups living in the Low Countries in the early Middle Ages. Clergy, nobility, peasants and townsmen greatly varied in their attitudes to labor, property, violence, and the handling and showing of emotions. Künzel explores how these social groups looked at themselves as a group, and how they looked at the other groups. Image and self-image could differ radically. The results of this research are specified and tested in four case studies on the interaction between group cultures, focusing respectively on the influence of oral and written traditions on a literary work, rituals as a means of conflict management in weakly centralized societies, stories as an expression of an urban group mentality, and beliefs on death and the afterlife.

More than ten years ago, some mediaevalists of the K.U.Leuven and the University of Ghent joined together to create a repertory of medieval narrative sources focusing on the southern Low Countries. A pre-print was published in a paper version and was soon followed by the electronic database entitled Narrative Sources which is available through the Internet. Since 1996, Narrative Sources has been adapted, supplemented and rearranged every year and over the years the number of inventoried items has been increased to far more than 2150 titles. The information present thus far in Narrative Sources already allows and facilitates the study of the sources as such, individually or collectively, qualitatively or quantitatively.In a next step the goal would be the exploitation of the contents, with a specific focus on monastic historiography, its social setting, and self-image. In this book some of the scholars working on this project present their work, their methodology and their results to-date.

Variatie, norm en processen in hte Nederlands, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: Dutch, abstract: In mijn werkstuk 'De geschiedenis van het purisme van vroeger tot nu. Zijn purismen vandaag nog actueel?' houd ik me bezig met het onderwerp purisme en ik discuteer de vraag of purismen vandaag nog actueel zijn. Ik begin met een korte definitie van het begrip purisme en het tegenovergestelde begip barbarisme want het moet duidelijk zijn waarover ik in het volgende schrijf. Daarna beschrijf ik ik de geschiedenis van het purisme in Nederland en Vlaanderen. In beide landen spreek je Nederlands maar toch heeft de taal heel andere ontwikkelingen doorlopen. In het volgende kijk ik of er een 'typisch Vlaams purisme' bestaat die alleen in Vlaanderen en niet in Nederland geldig is. In aansluiting daarop houd ik me bezig met de situatie van het purisme vandaag. Hebben purismen succes gehad en ontstaan nog nieuwe? Verder verglijk ik een barbarisme met een equivalent purisme. Welke variant is gangbaarder en wat zijn de redenen ervoor? In het laatste ondergedeelte heb ik geprobeerd te verduidelijken wie vandaag vooral taalzuivering doet en welke gevolgen dit voor het onderwerp purisme heeft.
