Il lavoro sulle cattedrali della Lombardia che si condensa in questa pubblicazione si colloca all’interno della ricerca complessiva, promossa e patrocinata dall'Ufficio Nazionale per i Beni Culturali Ecclesiastici della Conferenza Episcopale Italiana, riguardante la ricognizione sullo stato dell’adeguamento delle cattedrali italiane alla riforma liturgica scaturita dal Concilio Vaticano II (1962-65), in ragione degli orientamenti operativi forniti dalla Nota pastorale del 1996. La forma del testo ha tenuto conto delle precedenti esperienze che hanno interessato, nell'ordine, le regioni ecclesiastiche Triveneto, Campania, Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta, Emilia Romagna, con l'intento di raggiungere un'uniformità di presentazione delle schede informative realizzate per ognuna delle cattedrali; si è consapevoli di appartenere a un progetto complessivo con il quale, nel rispetto delle peculiarità delle singole aree geografiche, è possibile raggiungere un risultato di semplice lettura e utile comparazione, strumento necessario per la ricerca e la sperimentazione che si vanno compiendo nell’ambito dell’adeguamento liturgico delle chiese esistenti. Tutto ciò deve essere compreso quale testimonianza che la cattedrale è monumento vivo, appartenente alla comunità che intorno a lei si raccoglie e si trasforma venendone a sua volta ispirata. Attraverso ripetuti sopralluoghi all'interno dei monumenti e incontri con rettori, sacerdoti, responsabili diocesani per i beni culturali e l'arte sacra, nonché professionisti e artisti coinvolti nel disegno degli adeguamenti liturgici, si è ricostruito un quadro completo e circostanziato degli interventi messi in atto per innovare lo spazio celebrativo delle chiese-madri del territorio così densamente popolato che si svolge tra Po, Alpi, Mincio e Ticino. Il materiale d’archivio riguardante le opere di adattamento delle cattedrali lombarde è risultato spesso assai scarso, pertanto la metodologia di lavoro si è dovuta adattare alle differenze di approccio riscontrate nelle dieci diocesi coinvolte. Sono stati censiti, nonché restituiti graficamente e per immagini, gli adeguamenti liturgici realizzati, nelle chiese madri di: Milano, Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Crema, Cremona, Lodi, Mantova, Pavia e Vigevano. Una serie di saggi di noti studiosi introduce e accompagna il lavoro, esaminando i legami del monumento-cattedrale con il suo contesto urbano e sociale ed esplorando il tema del rapporto tra celebrazione, spazio e arte. La compilazione delle schede si è attenuta a criteri che tengono conto di un livello informativo generale e di approfondimenti il più possibile esaustivi dell'argomento, pur nella concisione dei dati presentati. Per ogni cattedrale si propone una sintesi della storia e dei caratteri del monumento, seguita dalla descrizione del percorso di adeguamento liturgico, in funzione delle esperienze passate, di quanto in atto nel presente e dei possibili sviluppi futuri; un disegno planimetrico dell’edificio, redatto attualizzando, tramite rilievi metrici, a vista e fotografici, i documenti di base, contiene l’indicazione scrupulosa dei luoghi e degli arredi liturgici, mentre un'ampia documentazione fotografica testimonia della lora forma e relazione con il contesto.

This book explores the issue of ecclesiastical authority in Romanesque sculpture on the portals and other sculpted “gateways” of churches in the north Italian region of Lombardy. Gillian B. Elliott examines the liturgical connection between the ciborium over the altar (the most sacred threshold inside the church), and the sculpted portals that appeared on church exteriors in medieval Lombardy. In cities such as Milan, Civate, Como, and Pavia, the liturgy of Saint Ambrose was practiced as an alternative to the Roman liturgy and the churches were constructed to respond to the needs of Ambrosian liturgy. Not only do the Romanesque churches in these places correspond stylistically and iconographically, but they were also linked politically in an era of intense struggle for ultimate regional authority. The book considers liturgical and artistic links between interior church furnishings and exterior church sculptural programs, and also applies new spatial methodologies to the interior and exterior of churches in Lombardy. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, medieval studies, architectural history, and religious studies.
