[Italiano]: Le città dell’intero pianeta sono seriamente minacciate dagli impatti del cambiamento climatico, e strategie efficaci ed efficienti a ridurne la loro esposizione e vulnerabilità per prevenire potenziali danni alla popolazione sono richieste. Le città in zone climatiche sensibili pagherebbero un conto molto salato, proprio come quelle che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo, che sono il focus del saggio. Questo lavoro si struttura in quattro parti. Nella prima, è presentato il frame culturale, politico e scientifico del tema del cambiamento climatico, attraverso un excursus dei negoziati, degli accordi e degli avanzamenti scientifici che hanno diviso l’opinione di ricercatori, cittadini e policy-makers. La seconda parte affronta il tema delle teorie del rischio e della loro applicazione al governo delle trasformazioni urbane e territoriali. Nella terza è presentato un focus al Mediterraneo e alla rete di città insediate lungo le sue coste. Nell’ultima parte si approfondiscono gli eventi climatici estremi che presentano le più alte probabilità di verificarsi per l’area oggetto di studio./[English]: Cities across the planet are seriously threatened by the impacts of climate change. Hence,effective and efficient strategies are required to reduce their exposure and vulnerability in order to prevent potential harmful damage to the population. Cities in climate sensitive zones would pay a high price, just like those bordering the Mediterranean, which are the focus of this work. This volume is structured in four parts. In the first, the cultural, political and scientific frame of the theme of climate change is presented, through an excursus of the negotiations, agreements and scientific advances that have divided the opinion of researchers, citizens and policymakers. The second section deals with the theme of risk theories and their application to the governance of urban and territorial transformations. The third presents a focus on the Mediterranean and the network of cities located along its coasts. In the last part, the extreme climatic events that have the highest probability of occurring for the Mediterranean area are explored.

This wide-ranging theme takes Braudel's concept of the “Mediterranean” as its starting point. Braudel's vision of an enclosed sea as a geographical opportunity for economic integration between nations with different religions, languages and ethnicities and political bodies still functions as a model for studies on a wide range of contexts. The goal of the 50th Study Week was to go beyond the study of individual systems in isolation, and to combine instead different analysis of open and enclosed seas or coastal areas in order to understand the integration role played by maritime connections in Europe. Since in pre-industrial civilizations water transport was easier than land transport, the time has come to bring attention to the way these relationship networks operated both on a European level and with Asian and North African trade partners. This volume starts from the great research traditions which have, however, rarely been integrated on a larger and continental scale, and analyses them on either a regional or thematic basis. Immanuel Wallerstein has developed Braudel's concept by conceptualising its intercultural and transnational dimensions and its role in the system of labour. He called it a "world system", not because it involves the whole world, but because it is larger than any legally defined political unit. And it is a "world economy" because the base link between the different parts of the system has an economic nature. The various regional research aspects and traditions have been linked together in a coherent approach which aims at evaluating: - What geographical, nautical, technical, economic, legal, social and cultural elements influenced the emergence of the various regional networks, and how these worked; - The nature and role of seaports as nodal points of sea routes and of their hinterland through rivers, canals and roads; - The commercial and personal ties between merchants and shipowners in various ports; - How regional networks connected with each other and how, over time, they ended up integrating into larger units; - How private networks, initially between merchant and seafarer organizations, ended up dealing with local authorities and, after their growth, with states and empires in order to protect their interests.

Il volume raccoglie un'ampia rassegna di scritti, in maggior parte inediti, in onore di Giuseppe Dato, professore ordinario di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica e Preside della facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, con sede a Siracusa. Gli autori sono docenti e ricercatori italiani e stranieri, oltre ad alcuni allievi oggi impegnati nella pratica professionale, che hanno intrattenuto con Giuseppe Dato rapporti di collaborazione scientifica, didattica, professionale o di amicizia. I testi proposti abbracciano un'ampia gamma di temi: dalla pianificazione di area vasta agli studi sul paesaggio, dalla progettazione urbana alla storia della città e del territorio, fino alle esperienze didattiche. Da essi emerge un quadro differenziato e molto articolato della ricerca e della prassi urbanistica negli anni recenti. Gli argomenti trattati sono riferiti a diversi Paesi che si affacciano sul bacino del Mediterraneo, sia sulla sponda europea che su quella nordafricana e asiatica, con una incursione nell'America Latina. Attraverso il filo conduttore delle relazioni personali degli autori con un docente e studioso che ha operato per un quarantennio nel Mezzogiorno, i testi proposti contribuiscono alla messa a fuoco delle recenti tendenze che emergono nelle discipline che si occupano della città e del territorio. Assieme alle esperienze didattiche e della diffusione della conoscenza del territorio i temi trattati spaziano dalle diverse declinazioni del concetto di sostenibilità, alla lettura delle principali trasformazioni urbane, alla mobilità nei suoi diversi aspetti, al ruolo dei servizi e delle infrastrutture tecnologiche nei sistemi urbani, alla tutela del paesaggio e del patrimonio culturale, alla partecipazione nella costruzione del piano. I punti di osservazione proposti rivelano alcune delle complessità e delle contraddizioni dei fenomeni territoriali che emergono in un orizzonte territoriale come quello che gravita attorno al bacino del Mediterraneo, dove passato e presente animano uno scenario ricco e vitale. Ha curato questa raccolta di scritti in onore del suo Maestro, FrancescoMartinico, professore associato di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica, con la collaborazione dei colleghi del Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, presso il quale Giuseppe Dato ha svolto gran parte della sua attività scientifica.
