L’intellectuel arabe a trop longtemps hésité à critiquer radicalement culture, langue et tradition. Il a trop longtemps reculé devant la critique des buts de la politique nationale locale, qui aboutit à l’étouffement de la démocratie et au dualisme généralisé ; il doit critiquer l’économisme superficiel, qui croit moderniser le pays et rationaliser la société en construisant une usine avec l’argent d’autrui, la technologie d’autrui, l’administration d’autrui ; il doit cesser de s’autocensurer lorsqu’il s’agit des problèmes de minorité et de démocratie locale, de peur de mettre en péril une apparente unité nationale. L’intellectuel arabe révolutionnaire a trop longtemps applaudi à l’appel de l’unité arabe, tout en acceptant et parfois justifiant la fragmentation de fait. [...]. L’intellectuel révolutionnaire arabe mène aujourd’hui une vie malheureuse, par-delà ses succès mondains, parce que sa société vit à un rythme infra-historique.
