Picnics are happy occasions and have always been a diversion from every day cares. We think of the picnic as an outdoor meal, set on a blanket, usually in the middle of the day, featuring a hamper filled with tasty morsels and perhaps a bottle of wine, but historically picnics came in many forms, served any time of the day. This first culinary history reveals rustic outdoor dining in its more familiar and unusual forms, the history of the word itself, the cultural context of picnics and who arranged them, and, most important, the gastronomic appeal. Drawing on various media and literature, painting, music, and even sculpture, Walter Levy provides an engaging and enlightening history of the picnic.

This book focuses on food and meals consumed during travel since the transport revolution and examines the ways in which the introduction of new forms of transport (propelled by steam and petrol engines), not only affected the way people travel but also led to a transformation in the way we eat. Eating on board a train is different from eating on a ship, and the same is true for other forms of transport. Such differences are not simply a question of quality or variations of menu; a unique history has defined each of these different situations, a history which is still largely to be studied. This volume contains contributions from a mix of established food historians and young researchers. Social and economic history overlap with cultural history approaches and forays into the fields of linguistics and art, confirming that the field of food history, and more generally food studies, is by definition a field of transdisciplinary and border research. This volume will be of interest for scholars within the field of food history, food studies, and food culture, as well as social and cultural historians dealing with industrialization or social policy.

Paul's Mistress By Guy de Maupassant In 1880 he published what is considered his first great work, 'Boule de Suif', (translated as as 'Dumpling', 'Butterball', 'Ball of Fat', or 'Ball of Lard') which met with a success that was both instant and overwhelming. Flaubert at once acknowledged that it was 'a masterpiece that will endure.' Maupassant had used his talents and experiences in the war to create something unique. This decade from 1880 to 1891 was to be the most pivotal of his career. With an audience now made available by the success of 'Boule de Suif' Maupassant organised himself to work methodically and relentlessly to produce between two and four volumes of work a year. The melding of his talents and business sense and the continual hunger of sources for his works made him wealthy. In his later years he developed a desire for solitude, an obsession for self-preservation, and a fear of death as well as a paranoia of persecution caused by the syphilis he had contracted in his youth. On January 2nd, 1892, Maupassant tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat. Unsuccessful he was committed to the private asylum of Esprit Blanche at Passy, in Paris. It was here on July 6th, 1893 that Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant died at the age of only 42. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Promise At Dawn written by Romain Gary and has been published by New Directions Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-31 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A classic of modern French literature, the thrilling real-life story of the military hero, ambassador, ladies man, writer, and loving son I grew up longing for the day when I could tear down the veil of darkness and absurdity concealing the true face of the universe and discover at last a smile of kindness and wisdom; I grew up in the certitude that one day I should help my fellow men to wrest the world from our enemies and give back the earth to those who ennoble it with their courage and warm it with their love. Promise at Dawn begins as the story of a mother’s sacrifice: alone and poor, she fights fiercely to give her son the very best. Romain Gary chronicles his childhood in Russia, Poland, and on the French Riveria; he recounts his adventurous life as a young man fighting for France in World War II. But above all he tells the story of the love for his mother that was his very life—their secret and private planet, their wonderland “born out of a mother’s murmur into a child’s ear, a promise whispered at dawn of future triumphs and greatness, of justice and love.”
