This book provides a wide-ranging analysis of French Jewish authors born after the Shoah and traces the development of the rich agenda of jeune littérature juive (young Jewish writing) from its beginnings in the late 1970s, into the 1980s and 1990s, when it gained intense momentum. Thomas Nolden uses a wealth of biographical information to expound on his central thesis: the abrupt interruption of transmission of the Jewish heritage by assimilation, migration, and near-extermination required these writers to reinvent themselves, their past, and their memories as Jews. Nolden provides concise readings of the fiction of more than two dozen writers of both Sephardic and Ashkenazi background living in present-day France. He demonstrates how contemporary Jewish writing has responded historically, culturally, politically, and aesthetically to developments in French society and in Jewish culture. His critical analysis of the major themes, concerns, and stylistic features of the authors' work connects Jewish writing in France to the traditions of Jewish writing both during the Diaspora and in Israel.

The writings of the great Symbolist poet Stephane Mallarme (1842-1898) were to become uniquely influential in twentieth century literary criticism. For critics and philosophers such as Maurice Blanchot and Jacques Derrida, Mallarme's name came to represent a rupture in literary history, and an opening of literature onto a radically new kind of writing. Through close readings of key works, Norman retraces Mallarme's trajectory as a poet, showing in particular how he positioned his work in relation to Hegel's Aesthetics. Analysing the motif of the sunset Norman argues that Mallarme situated his work at the conclusion of the history of art, in Hegelian terms, and it is this that made him so interesting for Blanchot and Derrida. Their readings, born of their wish to subvert Hegel's totalizing impulse, give rise to an entirely new view of works now almost universally seen as masterpieces.

L'institutionnalisation et l'organisation d'un ordre juridique sur un mode représentatif impliquent un processus de différenciation fonctionnelle entre représentés et représentants permettant la réduction de la multiplicité à l'unité. La personne morale apparaît comme le terme réunificateur de tout système representative. Dans l'ordre international, ce processus est perturbé par la présence, dans les organs intergouvernementaux, de représentants d'Etat qui sont autant d'organes des Etats membres, présence prolongée par le consentement aux actes adoptés en leur sein. Quel en est donc le sujet d'imputation : l'organisation ou ses membres ? Une théorie de l'acte doit être développée au coeur de la théorie de l'organe pour démontrer que l'organisation internationale est la personnification juridique d'une collectivité d'Etats dotée d'un système représentatif, et n'est que cela. La qualité de partie à un traité constitutif et de membre d'une organisation internationale ne prive l'Etat d'aucun des attributs de la souveraineté dans l'ordre international. Au contraire, la faculté d'investir un sujet de droit de compétences nouvelles est précisément un attribut de la souveraineté : l'organisation est tout entière une création des Etats membres. Leur souveraineté n'inhibe pas le processus de personnification de l'organisation qui, en retour, ne la confisque pas : la souveraineté et la relativité des rapports juridiques demeurent les principes régulateurs de l'ordre international.

Il faut cependant garder à l'esprit qu'au-delà de ce qui peut apparaitre comme approches discordantes des missionnaires chrétiens en situation coloniale, catholiques, protestants et autres presbytériens semblent avoir été toujours d'accord sur la nature sacrée de leur mission de conversion et de diffusion de la civilisation occidentale en pays de mission. Dommage que les dirigeants camerounais n'aient jamais réussi à s'inspirer de la démarche ci-dessus et à adopter une ligne de conduite un tant soit peu patriotique. Les politiciens postcoloniaux ont constamment fait montre d'un déconcertant opportunisme. Il peut certes leur arriver de solliciter publiquement ou officieusement l'Eglise à travers ses princes locaux pour accompagner les pouvoirs publics dans la résolution des conflits sociopolitiques. Mais par moments, ils n'hésiteront pas à leur rappeler que l'Eglise ne doit pas se mêler de politique. Elle doit se cantonner dans les affaires spirituelles, oubliant l'un des enseignements les plus mémorables de Mgr Ndongmo, à savoir qu' on ne peut pas conduire les hommes au ciel comme si la terre n'existait pas.
