This publication includes the Proceedings of the PLE Conference 2013. The Conference on Personal Learning Environments is now an established annual international, scientific event and a reference point for the current state of the art in research and development in Personal Learning Environments (PLE). The PLE Conference creates a space for researchers and practitioners to share concepts, case studies and research related to the design, development and implementation of Personal Learning Environments in diverse educational contexts including formal and informal education. The 4th PLE Conference in 2013 took place at Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Germany together with a parallel event at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The PLE Conference 2013 received 75 submissions and welcomed almost 100 delegates from Europe, Asia, Australasia, North and South America and Africa. The papers included in the Proceedings provide rich and valuable theoretical and empirical insights into Personal Learning Environments. Personal Learning Environments (PLE) is an approach in Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) based on the principles of learner autonomy, ownership and empowerment. PLEs are integrated, individual environments for learning which include specific technologies, methods, tools, contents, communities and services constituting complex learning infrastructures, enhancing new educational practices and at the same time emerging from these new practices. This represents a shift away from the traditional model of technology-enhanced learning based on knowledge transfer towards a model based on knowledge construction and sharing.

This book explores the transformative power of swarm intelligence and digital innovations in shaping the cities of the future. It presents a comprehensive analysis of how social learning, citizen engagement, advanced technology, design, construction, planning and public policies converge to create cities that are sustainable, resilient, and inclusive. The initial chapters stress the importance of collective intelligence in urban development, using technologies like Virtual Reality to increase citizen participation and democratise decision-making. Public policies play a key role in driving the digital transformation needed for greener cities, with frameworks and tools to enhance transparency and accountability. Digital technologies in policymaking ensure that policies are adaptive, data-driven, and responsive to real-time challenges. Internet of Things systems are explored for their role in improving public safety, urban resilience, and energy efficiency through digital twins, blockchain, and sensor networks. Swarm intelligence is highlighted for optimising energy management, reducing consumption, and promoting renewable resources. Healthcare integration into urban planning and sustainability is also discussed, with a comparative analysis of cities showing how tech innovation enhances resilience against climate change. Swarm intelligence beyond cities is also explored, such as for disaster response, healthcare, environmental conservation, and agriculture. Autonomous systems like drones and nanobots are shown to improve efficiency across various sectors. Overall, this book advocates for a holistic approach to urban development, integrating digital technologies and collective intelligence to create cities that are technologically advanced, socially equitable, and environmentally sustainable.

The Cross Domain City of the Future Graduation Lab, situated in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft, has been a pioneer in experimenting with a multidisciplinary approach to education on the built environment. Drawing upon this expertise over the past years, this book reflects on multidisciplinarity in the built environment and its implementation in education on the built environment. How should one approach multidisciplinarity in education and practice? What encompasses its core elements, benefits, and challenges? By addressing these questions, the book aims to inform students and practitioners within the realm of the built environment by sharing insights from experiences in multidisciplinary education. It presents eight conclusions regarding the future of multidisciplinary education and, thereby, seeks to contribute to a more humane and sustainable future for cities: Process is central to multidisciplinary collaboration. Negotiating positions, ensuring an environment of respect, balance and open-mindedness, and setting a common vocabulary. Multidisciplinarity can be a way to foster innovation. It triggers complementarity and confrontation. As with any innovation, there is potential for greater outcomes, but, at the same time, extra risks emerge. These need to be managed. Multidisciplinarity could be better integrated into organisational structures. Disciplinarity and multidisciplinarity are in mutual coexistence. They are inseparable. They can complement and contradict each other. Problem precedes solution, not the opposite. Framing the problem, or ‘problematizing’, is a considerable share of the actual solution. This is particularly applicable to multidisciplinarity. Multidisciplinarity is by nature composed of fluid boundaries. Navigating through an enormous diversity of perspectives requires agility, flexibility, independence, spirit of adventure and embracing uncertainty. Professionals should be trained as ‘T-shape’: grounded in their field while able to dialogue with other fields. Both generalists and specialists are needed. Education should provide opportunities for both.

In response to unparalleled challenges and opportunities, the scope of management is undergoing a profound transformation. Organisations must adapt and innovate in order to flourish in an era characterised by rapid technological advancements, climate change, shifting demographics, and evolving social norms. The three pillars of modern management— sustainability, diversity, and inclusivity—reflect a comprehensive approach that prioritises the well-being of people and the planet over short-term profits and reflects a commitment to social responsibility. In the current era of management, sustainability has emerged as a critical issue. Organisations must incorporate ethical considerations into their decision-making processes, reduce their carbon footprints, and implement eco-conscious practices as the effects of climate change become more severe. According to Paul Polman, the former CEO of Unilever, “Sustainability is not a charity; it is a business case.”
