Project Report from the year 2009 in the subject Pedagogy - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, Vanier College, course: Research Methods, language: English, abstract: This pilot study consists of research about academic achievement and LD students. Our research project was initially to contribute to empirical data analysis on the question of how learning disabilities affect a College student's academic achievement and social life. However, due to certain practical issues, there was a shift in our research question. The purpose of our study is to determine the factors that hinder LD students in their academic achievement and social life and to propose solutions that help LD students academically and socially. We hypothesized that learning disabilities could negatively affect academic achievement and social life in College regardless of gender or cultural background and that there exist factors that hinder them in their academic achievement and social life. After interviewing a convenient sample of four different students who share similar learning disabilities, we found out that three out of four LD students require extra time to study and understand. They achieve well in school. Their heavy course workload and the teaching methods used hinder them in their learning process. However, the learning centre and other academic services help LD students to improve their academic performance. Some interviewees claimed that being more outgoing and open-minded with their learning disabilities help them in their long-term social relationships.

This research attempts to determine whether homework has an influence on academic achievement. Several variables which may influence academic achievement were analyzed. These variables included (a) time spent on homework, (b) parental support, (c) student attitude and (d) homework completion. The students studied were from a rural Illinois school in grades 9 through 12 with learning disabilities. Each student took a survey questioning the amount of time spent on homework, parental or guardian support, attitude, and homework completion. The answers were then compared to students' grade point averages. The results indicate a moderate correlation between GPA and parental help with homework, r = 0.36 and GPA and homework completion rates, r = -0.49. Using a significance level of 0.10, there is a statistical significance between GPA and homework completion rate. The results suggest further research is needed on using Response to Intervention (RTI) within schools to help increase the benefits of homework, especially on increasing homework completion rates.

More than 200 years of research in the field of learning disabilities have provided us with a vast body of knowledge, albeit without answering the fundamental questions: what and why. Today, it is widely accepted that learning disabilities or specific learning disabilities represent a real situation, which is mainly related to education, but also has long-term consequences in the social and professional life of individuals, who may be “smart”, but not know how to learn. This book examines transdisciplinary psychoeducational learning disability evaluation procedures, along with intervention programs aiming to recognize the strengths of students with learning disabilities and address their needs. More specifically, it reviews the origins and evolution of such assessment models and evidence-informed intervention practices, and provides guidance and implications for practice and research. The book will furnish educators and other school-based professionals with a better understanding of the nuances and challenges of the field, allowing them to build their capacity of working with such student populations.

Many students receiving special education services are identified with a learning disability. These students learn best in ways that utilize their strengths and that provide compensatory strategies for learning success despite processing deficits. This case study examined whether Reuven Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment intervention, the Organization of Dots, affected the overall performance of a middle school student at a Title 1 school. The subject receives special education services in the Special Day Class setting. She qualified for these services due to a severe auditory processing deficit and low academic performance, which is not commensurate with her average cognitive ability. The results, obtained from standard score comparisons between previous and most recent triennial Individualized Education Program assessments on the nine basic achievement tests of the Woodcock Johnson III, showed an increase in most academic areas. Additional research with a larger population is needed to support these findings.

This study explored the relationship between several variables known to influence achievement in Canadian Grade 6 students with Learning Disabilities (LD) who received instruction in either a regular class or specialized program placement. The main independent variable was program placement while the influence of four other independent variables was explored (i.e., level of academic need; prior achievement; socioeconomic status and sex). The dependent variable was a standardized, large-scale assessment of achievement. Hierarchical multiple regression was conducted on a secondary data file in order to address the following research questions: i) Does placement in a regular or specialized program influence the educational outcomes for Grade 6 students with LD, after controlling for the influence of prior achievement in Grade 3?; ii) Is there a relationship between the sociodemographic variables of sex and/or socioeconomic status and achievement for students with LD placed in either a regular or specialized program?; and iii) What influence does the student's level of academic need have on achievement, beyond program placement, and after controlling for the influence of the other variables in the model? Results revealed that the variables of program placement and prior achievement were significant predictors of scholastic success only when the level of academic need variable was not taken into account. When the follow-up analysis focused on a relatively matched group of students with similar academic need, none of the predictors in the regression model significantly influenced achievement -- including program placement. These results provide important insight into the nuanced relationship of the ecological variables known to affect learning in students with LD placed in regular or specialized programs for instruction. Implications are discussed for stakeholders in Ontario's public education system in terms of the optimum service delivery model for students with LD, and the inclusive education debate in Canada and abroad.
