A learning system can be defined as a system which can adapt its behaviour to become more effective at a particular task or set of tasks. It consists of an architecture with a set of variable parameters and an algorithm. Learning systems are useful in many fields, one of the major areas being in control and system identification. This work covers major aspects of learning systems: system architecture, choice of performance index and methods measuring error. Major learning algorithms are explained, including proofs of convergence. Artificial neural networks, which are an important class of learning systems and have been subject to rapidly increasing popularity, are discussed. Where appropriate, examples have been given to demonstrate the practical use of techniques developed in the text. System identification and control using multi-layer networks and CMAC (Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller) are also presented.

Artificial Intelligence is concerned with producing devices that help or replace human beings in their daily activities. Neural-symbolic learning systems play a central role in this task by combining, and trying to benefit from, the advantages of both the neural and symbolic paradigms of artificial intelligence. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of neural-symbolic learning systems, and an invaluable overview of the latest research issues in this area. It is divided into three sections, covering the main topics of neural-symbolic integration - theoretical advances in knowledge representation and learning, knowledge extraction from trained neural networks, and inconsistency handling in neural-symbolic systems. Each section provides a balance of theory and practice, giving the results of applications using real-world problems in areas such as DNA sequence analysis, power systems fault diagnosis, and software requirements specifications. Neural-Symbolic Learning Systems will be invaluable reading for researchers and graduate students in Engineering, Computing Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Neurocomputing. It will also be of interest to Intelligent Systems practitioners and anyone interested in applications of hybrid artificial intelligence systems.

Adaptive learning systems allow corporations to enhance and adjust training to the individual learner. Adaptive learning also allows companies to measure and assess what training participants have learned and how to further help them. In “Personalizing Training With Adaptive Learning Systems,” James Bennett presents an overview of adaptive learning and then dives deeper into details that will make working with adaptive learning systems much easier and more effective. This issue of TD at Work: · identifies the types of problems adaptive learning solves · defines common components of adaptive learning systems · discusses designing and developing in an adaptive system, including providing a design steps template · addresses what to look for when choosing an adaptive learning system.

Education is one of the most important complement for people from the beginning of humanity. With the globalizing and fasten world, Distance Learning has gain an increasing importance. Especially, information technologies increase the spread and importance of the distance learning systems. Institutions and universities have started using distance learning systems day by day to reach the potential students from all over the world. Distance learning systems also decrease the costs of both institutions and students with effective learning way. Distance learning systems principally have four main supplements; cost, technology, education and distance learning related supplements. Due to its structure, the most important supplement of distance learning systems is technology–based components which contains various and complicated details. Most of these details looks totally technical but they are more important actually, because of their implementation to education, and connection with the people using the system. The main motivation of this book is to find out the most important components of distance learning systems in Turkey and prioritize them to lead the distance learning systems more effective and better, both for the students and for the investors. knowledge Within the current literature, none of the studies analyzed all components and prioritize them for both Turkey and in general, especially, educational components and technological components together. With the help of the advanced internet and digital technology, this is a challenging subject for the distance learning systems in today’s world. Educational institutions cannot promote their distance learning programs only with their instructors or course contents anymore like decades ago when the technology is much worse than now. Classical promotion materials do not take attention of the new generation who are digital natives. Because, they have already known how to access something or use technology, at least more than digital immigrants. Especially with the accessible technology and accessible reputed education contents with this technology all around the world, we should observe the importance of education and distance learning components together with technology components. In today’s World, if students want to access a distance learning system, they need only a computer and an internet access, excluding course cost. So, students can access to any distance learning system from all around the world easily. This situation is also valid for distance learning institutions. Similarly, this is valid for distance learning institutions. They can hire anybody from all around the world without bringing them to the institution with a perfect information technologies infrastructure. Investors of distance learning systems and institutions in Turkey should invest in and improve distance learning systems according to the importance of all components of distance learning systems together to get ahead of the world.
