Trees contain leaves of different colour, size and shape. Presented are sonnet, lyric, ballad, ode and more for ones enjoyment, each leaf a new page. While reading one is taken to a land of feelings and emotions found in poetry where one can personally experience these private sensations. The rhyme and rhythm change the mood and the beat of the heart. Each page will cause a link to the shadows of ones past. Sadness, pathos, love and joy herein intermingle. One has the sensation of life’s emotion roller coaster joy ride. I was born in 1928 and found an affinity to poetry from the time I could read. I started writing while in public school and have continued in the pursuit of the perfect poem. My working years were spent searching for an occupation I could enjoy and get paid for. Employed by the Canadian National Railroad in Fort Erie, Region Niagara I found my calling, locomotive engineer. In order to attain that lofty position I worked from the section gang up to fireman position and finally graduated to engineer. I ran steam locomotive engines in the days when railroading had lots of romance attached to it. I wrote poems about working conditions, fellow workers, locomotives, and any subject that caught my fancy. My years spent in cadet work and community service did not escape my pen. My life has been blessed with two fine children and two lovely wives. Death unfortunately took both my wives. Our end, my friend!

With NRG his XOD/But did X10U8/The miss whose OBDNC/Did all LEV8. -- from "Letters Prey" Not 21st Century texting, but some of the 19th Century poetry of H.C. Dodge. The poems were once published widely in newspapers and other periodicals, whereby Dodge enjoyed a certain degree of popularity. However, by that same token, the author's work might now be considered scattered, as it was never collected together in a book - an impediment to finding new readers. This little volume is a first step towards giving H.C. Dodge more recognition for all the wordplay, the reasonably challenging writing constraints, the spirit of fun. If you're a reader who thinks wordplay great/your thirst for such tricks you may find these puns sate/Though if you're a groaner, they may only grate/(contrivances lead some to have for puns hate). -- CKP Whene'er a youthful lover/His courting has big gun/Howitzer prizes him to learn/That 'tis not always fun. -- from "Cannon Aiding" Aphorisms, clichés, even riddles were all made to rhyme: A cat has nine lives; cat away mice will play/Casting pearls before swine; where's a will there's a way. -- from "Old Saws in Rhyme" Why does a winning jockey bold/Resemble one who has a cold?/The jockey's horse is sound, of course/The other fellow's sound is hoarse. -- from "Conundrums" Letters used to determine poems' forms in a variety of ways: An artist, admiring an angel aright/Bewildered by beauty bewitchingly bright/Charmed, conquered completely, called, courted, confessed/Devotion, declaring division distressed. -- from "A Letter Ration" A's for Alcohol, curse of mankind/B is its Bars, with th' Arch Tempter behind/C is the Crimes that its victims commit/D is its Drunkards that die in a fit. -- from "The Drinker's Alphabet" Other poems were more conventional in form, especially when taking on moral themes like the importance of family, or the dangers posed by the love of money or alcohol - and the value of avoiding vices: It doesn't cost money, as many suppose/To have a good time on the earth/The best of its pleasures are free unto those/Who know how to value their worth. -- from "It Doesn't Cost Money" Over a century ago readers enjoyed the poems; they may provide a pleasant diversion still. An overlooked poet: unusual find?/Here gathered some verses so long ago rhymed/in newspapers only, now set in a book./Encourage acquaintances to take a look/and see if they like them: that is the great hope/(or else, the time wasted, left feeling a dope). -- CKP

The writings you find in this book were created and collected as part of the "POET TREE" concept originally mastered in Palm Springs, at the Palapas Artist Center starting in April 1994. The idea of an Artist Garden was to have a spiritual and creative venue where artistic energies could be expressed and shared with the public at local, national, and global events. Poetry, music, writing, dance, theater and creative art needed a public stage. A more perfect place at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains, upon sacred ground, could not be found. The setting evolved into a place where visitors felt moved to leave notes attached to the tree branches, leaves, and yellow flowers growing on the restored Mexican Palo Verde tree. The collection of poems, notes, songs and tales from the hearts of those visiting the "Poet Tree" became so numerous I asked one of the artists to paint a mailbox and I placed it under the tree. Poets and would-be poets from all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, colors, and faiths started leaving notes and poems in the "Poet Tree Mailbox." I share these prose, thoughts and lyrics with you now. Please scroll to top and purchase a copy of this book now.

Author, Adrianne Carlino Gentile, shares the many branches of her personal growth as a daughter, mother, lover, and spiritual wise woman. Her verse is insightful without being complicated. This collection of poems encompasses such shared human sentiments as the ecstasy of a lover's thoughts in "Moments to Share", the comfort in tribute to the loss of a parent in "Daddy's Hands", and humor in the retort to a controversial song written about short people in "Shortness Is In, Tallness Is Out". The simple spiritual answer to World Peace in "Why Won't We Listen" is thought provoking. Read 66 LEAVES and relive the unfolding of your own tree of life.

The alphabet poems, written to go with each piece of artwork, done by 5 to 7-year olds, contain many commonly used words. After the child has read each poem they will read "After you have listened to me, please sign your name on my poet tree." A parent, sibling, grandparent, relative, friend, or teacher will sign one of the leaves with a pen that will not go through the page. The author did something similar with her kindergarten, grade one, and two classes for years as part of her home reading program, and both the parents and students loved it.

The poems in Sydney Beck's green leaves, dead trees are an act of both reclamation and redemption. One of the most human things a human can do is to acknowledge their own particular brokenness out loud. But then what do we do with it? If we plant that in the ground, what new green thing will grow there? "Keeping anything / Alive / Is exhausting," the poet confesses. But when we become weary of the world, it's poetry we turn to for healing and restoration. There is real pain and heartbreak in this collection. Loneliness and betrayal. But there is also hope and empowerment pushing up stubbornly through the dark soil toward warm sunlight. Even when the tree looks all but dead, Beck's straightforward and compelling poems promise resurrection.

A thoughtful new collection of poems, one that deconstructs the deceptively simple question of what it means to be good—a good person, a good citizen, a good teacher, a good poet, a good father. With These Trees, Those Leaves, This Flower, That Fruit, Hayan Charara presents readers with a medley of ambitious analyses, written in characteristically wry verse. He takes philosophers to task, jousts with academics, and scrutinizes hollow gestures of empathy, exposing the dangers of thinking ourselves “separate / from [our] thoughts and experiences.” After all, “No work of love / will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart.” But how do we act on fullness of heart? How, knowing as we do that “genocide is inscribed in our earliest and holiest texts”? Thoughtful but never preachy, Charara sits beside us, granting us access to life’s countless unglamorous dilemmas: crushing a spider when we promised we wouldn’t, nearing madness from a newborn’s weeping, resenting our lovers for what happened in a dream. “Good poems demand to be written from inside the poet,” we are reminded. And that is where we find ourselves here: inside a lively and ethical mind, entertained by Charara’s good company even as goodness challenges us to do more.
