A large number of mathematical models in many diverse areas of science and engineering have lead to the formulation of optimization problems where the best solution (globally optimal) is needed. This book covers a small subset of important topics in global optimization with emphasis on theoretical developments and scientific applications.

Basic Concepts Of Global Optimization written by Oliver Stein and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-24 with Mathematics categories.

This textbook is an introduction to global optimization, which treats mathematical facts stringently on the one hand, but also motivates them in great detail and illustrates them with 80 figures. The book is therefore not only aimed at mathematicians, but also at natural scientists, engineers and economists who want to understand and apply mathematically sound methods in their field. With almost two hundred pages, the book provides enough choices to use it as a basis for differently designed lectures on global optimization. The detailed treatment of the global solvability of optimization problems under application-relevant conditions sets a new accent that enriches the stock of previous textbooks on optimization. Using the theory and algorithms of smooth convex optimization, the book illustrates that the global solution of a class of optimization problems frequently encountered in practice is efficiently possible, while for the more difficult-to-handle non-convex problems it develops in detail the ideas of branch-and-bound methods.

This book treats the subject of global optimization with minimal restrictions on the behavior on the objective functions. In particular, optimal conditions were developed for a class of noncontinuous functions characterized by their having level sets that are robust. The integration-based approach contrasts with existing approaches which require some degree of convexity or differentiability of the objective function. Some computational results on a personal computer are presented.

This book presents state-of-the-art results and methodologies in modern global optimization, and has been a staple reference for researchers, engineers, advanced students (also in applied mathematics), and practitioners in various fields of engineering. The second edition has been brought up to date and continues to develop a coherent and rigorous theory of deterministic global optimization, highlighting the essential role of convex analysis. The text has been revised and expanded to meet the needs of research, education, and applications for many years to come. Updates for this new edition include: · Discussion of modern approaches to minimax, fixed point, and equilibrium theorems, and to nonconvex optimization; · Increased focus on dealing more efficiently with ill-posed problems of global optimization, particularly those with hard constraints; · Important discussions of decomposition methods for specially structured problems; · A complete revision of the chapter on nonconvex quadratic programming, in order to encompass the advances made in quadratic optimization since publication of the first edition. · Additionally, this new edition contains entirely new chapters devoted to monotonic optimization, polynomial optimization and optimization under equilibrium constraints, including bilevel programming, multiobjective programming, and optimization with variational inequality constraint. From the reviews of the first edition: The book gives a good review of the topic. ...The text is carefully constructed and well written, the exposition is clear. It leaves a remarkable impression of the concepts, tools and techniques in global optimization. It might also be used as a basis and guideline for lectures on this subject. Students as well as professionals will profitably read and use it.—Mathematical Methods of Operations Research, 49:3 (1999)

This volume collects the expanded notes of four series of lectures given on the occasion of the CIME course on Nonlinear Optimization held in Cetraro, Italy, from July 1 to 7, 2007. The Nonlinear Optimization problem of main concern here is the problem n of determining a vector of decision variables x ? R that minimizes (ma- n mizes) an objective function f(·): R ? R,when x is restricted to belong n to some feasible setF? R , usually described by a set of equality and - n n m equality constraints: F = {x ? R : h(x)=0,h(·): R ? R ; g(x) ? 0, n p g(·): R ? R }; of course it is intended that at least one of the functions f,h,g is nonlinear. Although the problem canbe stated in verysimpleterms, its solution may result very di?cult due to the analytical properties of the functions involved and/or to the number n,m,p of variables and constraints. On the other hand, the problem has been recognized to be of main relevance in engineering, economics, and other applied sciences, so that a great lot of e?ort has been devoted to develop methods and algorithms able to solve the problem even in its more di?cult and large instances. The lectures have been given by eminent scholars, who contributed to a great extent to the development of Nonlinear Optimization theory, methods and algorithms. Namely, they are: – Professor Immanuel M.

Global optimization is concerned with the characterization and computation of global minima or maxima of nonlinear functions. Such problems are widespread in mathematical modeling of real world systems for a very broad range of applications. The applications include economies of scale, fixed charges, allocation and location problems, quadratic assignment and a number of other combinatorial optimization problems. More recently it has been shown that certain aspects of VLSI chip design and database problems can be formulated as constrained global optimization problems with a quadratic objective function. Although standard nonlinear programming algorithms will usually obtain a local minimum to the problem , such a local minimum will only be global when certain conditions are satisfied (such as f and K being convex).
