At a time increasingly dominated by globalization, migration, and the clash between supranational and ultranational ideologies, the relationship between language and borders has become more complicated and, in many ways, more consequential than ever. This book shows how concepts of ‘language’ and ‘multilingualism’ look different when viewed from Belize, Lagos, or London, and asks how ideas about literature and literary form must be remade in a contemporary cultural marketplace that is both linguistically diverse and interconnected, even as it remains profoundly unequal. Bringing together scholars from the fields of literary studies, applied linguistics, publishing, and translation studies, the volume investigates how multilingual realities shape not only the practice of writing but also modes of literary and cultural production. This collection of essays explores concepts present in literatures in French that, since the 2007 manifesto, more and more critics, suspicious of the term Francophonie, now prefer to designate as littérature-monde (world literature). The book shows how the three movements of antillanité, créolité and littérature-monde each in their own way break with the past and distance themselves from the hexagonal centre. The critics in this collection show how writers seek to represent an authentic view of their history, culture, identities, reality and diversities. According to many of the contributors, creolization and littérature-monde offer new perspectives and possibly a new genre of literature. This monograph represents the first comprehensive study of the multifaceted representations of the complex phenomenon of globalization in the diverse repertoire of the 2008 Nobel Laureate in Literature. This interdisciplinary investigation explores the initial euphoria related to the ambivalent concept of the 'global village' and how this evaporated dream can perhaps be reappropriated to create a better global society for both the human and Cosmic Other through the lens of Le Cl zio's fiction. Chapter one offers a conceptual framework for understanding the Franco-Mauritian author's nuanced ideas concerning globalization. It also probes the original ambivalence of McLuhan's celebrated notion of a global village in addition to its euphoric reception. Chapter two explores the current state of the interconnected, interdependent modern world in which many disenfranchised and marginalized individuals are living a recurring nightmare. Chapter three examines Le Cl zio's deconstruction of the simplistic ideology of consumerism that is indicative of contemporary consumer republics. This section also underscores the intricate systems of hegemonic domination, such as the media, created by the transnational corporations that dominate the global economic landscape to sustain their supremacy. Chapter four delves into Le Cl zio's ecocentric humanism that extends to all other living creatures by debunking Manichean dualities that separate human beings from elemental matter and the rest of the universe. The final chapter examines recent texts, such as Raga, Ourania, and Histoire du pied et autres fantaisies, which encourage the reader to envision what a more just and egalitarian global village might encompass. These works dismiss neoliberal fantasies and consumerist ideology that have justified the systematic exploitation of everyone and everything in the name of progress, but they also urge the modern subject to be resilient in the face of tremendous adversity. Instead of accepting the imposition of a monolithic, socioeconomic model that is riddled with inequality and injustice and which serves the interests of the Happy Few, Le Cl zio suggests that the first step is to resist integration into the global village by stoically confronting reality and having the necessary courage to propose another vision which counterpoints McLuhan's misguided one.

Visant à prolonger le débat suscité par la publication du manifeste « Pour une littérature-monde en français », Trajectoires et dérives de la littérature-monde. Poétiques de la relation et du divers dans les espaces francophones propose de saisir créateurs associés à la « périphérie » dans une nouvelle dynamique transversale, transnationale, indépendante de la médiation d’un centre dominant. C’est dire que la « littérature-monde », tout en mettant en cause les dispositifs traditionnels des systèmes et des champs inhérents aux configurations littéraires nationales, cautionne le renforcement d’un espace inter-systémique d’échanges dans lequel les aires francophones de la périphérie nouent entre elles des relations aussi bien institutionnelles que discursives. Affranchie de tout impérialisme culturel, la littérature-monde cherche de la sorte à promouvoir des pratiques inclusives d’insertion et de communication entre littératures dans l’optique d’un échiquier réorganisé du monde des lettres. Elle s’attaque au mythe du monolithisme culturel, se veut une critique de l’état actuel élitiste du domaine littéraire centriste qui se maintient dans une ségrégation délibérée ou inconsciente par rapport aux auteurs francophones et francophiles. Par ce livre, nous espérons apporter une contribution pertinente aux échanges théoriques et empiriques entourant la « littérature-monde », concept devenu incontournable pour quiconque est soucieux du développement et de l’avenir de la littérature de langue française. Cécilia W. Francis est professeure agrégée à l’Université Saint-Thomas (Fredericton, Canada), où elle est directrice du Département de langues romanes. Spécialiste des littératures francophones du Maghreb et de l’Amérique du nord ainsi que des théories interculturelles de l’énonciation, elle a publié de nombreux articles consacrés à ces domaines de recherche. Elle est l’auteure d’un livre intitulé Gabrielle Roy, autobiographe. Subjectivité, passions et discours (finaliste, Prix Gabrielle-Roy 2007). Professeur titulaire à l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick et fondateur de l’Association des professeurs des littératures acadienne et québécoise de l’Atlantique (APLAQA), Robert Viau est l’auteur de nombreux articles et de dix livres portant sur les littératures acadienne, québécoise et francophone de l’Ouest canadien.

Si, pour le sociologue Jacques Leenhardt, la littérature est, dans nos sociétés, indissolublement livre (objet pris dans un circuit marchand), oeuvre littéraire (travail sur la pensée et le langage) et lecture (communication entre un écrivain et un lecteur), la désunion entre l’objet et sa lecture va désormais grandissant, symptôme manifeste des fluctuations d’une industrie de la culture irrévocablement mondialisée. En effet, les nouvelles donnes de l’activité économique du livre dépendent de conglomérats financiers régis par des logiques de rendement qui débordent les enclaves singulières pour former des réseaux par-delà une géographie prédéfinie. Le livre francophone se commercialise donc dans un paysage présenté comme « métissé », rendu « hybride » de par le brouillage de l’identité des producteurs et des consommateurs. La littérature antillaise tient une place exemplaire au coeur du vaste ensemble francophone, les écrivains caribéens étant simultanément imbriqués dans le local (la culture créole), le national (la culture française) et le global (le marché mondial de la traduction). Elle est, de ce fait, le lieu par excellence pour une réflexion sur la théorisation de la réception et de la commercialisation d’auteurs qui écrivent en marge de l’esthétique admise et de toute taxinomie. Les questions qui sous-tendent cet ouvrage sont les suivantes : l’unification des marchés du livre à l’échelle mondiale est-elle en synergie avec les impératifs de la « diversité culturelle » telle qu’elle est définie par la Déclaration universelle de l’UNESCO à ce sujet ? Le texte peut-il prétendre à l’autonomie poétique lorsque le livre devient une marchandise ? Comment appréhender la transparence putative entre les concepts de « Weltliteratur », « World Literature » et « Littérature-monde » ?
