The mystifying murder of a child brings us into a dark world of intrigue When returning WWII veteran Bill Warren becomes the replacement police chief of a quiet Cape Cod town, his duties seem simple: days spent breaking up petty rackets and domestic disturbances and nights spent caring for his disabled son. But these commitments can't shut out the echoes of the life he might have led. Then a child goes missing and Warren begins an investigation more frightening than any he could have imagined. As the case grows increasingly mystifying and attracts statewide attention, the press converges on the placid Cape. Desperate to get answers before another child dies, Warren will have to confront a criminal conspiracy, a secretive pharmaceutical firm, and an odd local clergyman who may be either a miracle worker or a madman. The America that Warren left is not the one he has returned to. As the investigation expands into the squalid corners of a world where the police may be as culpable as the men they hunt, Warren is confronted by his own past and the threat it poses to his future. A thrilling debut in the finest noir tradition, a painterly evocation of a seminal time and place, Lesser Evils is a vivid portrait of a father trying to remain honorable in a changing world. The novel will keep you riveted until its startling and unexpected denouement.

“Transposes the corrupt world of James Ellroy’s L.A. Confidential to the Cape Cod of 1957 . . . Ratchets up the suspense to an almost unbearable level” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). When the first young boy goes missing in a quiet Cape Cod town, Bill Warren, who took the job of police chief after returning from World War II, is pulled into a morass that promises no happy ending. As his pursuit uncovers the unimaginable, he is led into a world of criminal conspiracy, a secretive pharmaceutical firm, and an odd local clergyman who may be either a miracle worker or a madman. And while caring for his disabled son, he must fight to maintain control of an investigation in which more and more people—from the state police to the district attorney to a tenacious Boston reporter—are taking a serious interest. As facts become murkier and the threat rises, Warren struggles to survive in a world where the police can be just as corrupt as the criminals they chase, and where a murder inquiry will ultimately lead to his front door. “A deftly plotted and perfectly realized crime novel that features one of the most interesting, complex and likable protagonists of recent times.” —Stav Sherez, author of Eleven Days “[A] highly impressive debut.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Winston Churchill said of democracy that it was ‘the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.’ The same could be said of liberalism. While liberalism displays an unfailing optimism with regard to the capacity of human beings to make themselves ‘masters and possessors of nature’, it displays a profound pessimism when it comes to appreciating their moral capacity to build a decent world for themselves. As Michea shows, the roots of this pessimism lie in the idea – an eminently modern one – that the desire to establish the reign of the Good lies at the origin of all the ills besetting the human race. Liberalism’s critique of the ‘tyranny of the Good’ naturally had its costs. It created a view of modern politics as a purely negative art – that of defining the least bad society possible. It is in this sense that liberalism has to be understood, and understands itself, as the ‘politics of lesser evil’. And yet while liberalism set out to be a realism without illusions, today liberalism presents itself as something else. With its celebration of the market among other things, contemporary liberalism has taken over some of the features of its oldest enemy. By unravelling the logic that lies at the heart of the liberal project, Michea is able to shed fresh light on one of the key ideas that have shaped the civilization of the West.

The Lesser Evil written by Michael Ignatieff and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-04 with Philosophy categories.

Must we fight terrorism with terror, match assassination with assassination, and torture with torture? Must we sacrifice civil liberty to protect public safety? In the age of terrorism, the temptations of ruthlessness can be overwhelming. But we are pulled in the other direction too by the anxiety that a violent response to violence makes us morally indistinguishable from our enemies. There is perhaps no greater political challenge today than trying to win the war against terror without losing our democratic souls. Michael Ignatieff confronts this challenge head-on, with the combination of hard-headed idealism, historical sensitivity, and political judgment that has made him one of the most influential voices in international affairs today. Ignatieff argues that we must not shrink from the use of violence--that far from undermining liberal democracy, force can be necessary for its survival. But its use must be measured, not a program of torture and revenge. And we must not fool ourselves that whatever we do in the name of freedom and democracy is good. We may need to kill to fight the greater evil of terrorism, but we must never pretend that doing so is anything better than a lesser evil. In making this case, Ignatieff traces the modern history of terrorism and counter-terrorism, from the nihilists of Czarist Russia and the militias of Weimar Germany to the IRA and the unprecedented menace of Al Qaeda, with its suicidal agents bent on mass destruction. He shows how the most potent response to terror has been force, decisive and direct, but--just as important--restrained. The public scrutiny and political ethics that motivate restraint also give democracy its strongest weapon: the moral power to endure when the furies of vengeance and hatred are spent. The book is based on the Gifford Lectures delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 2003.

This book comprises 14 essays by scholars who disagree about the methods and purposes of comparing Nazism and Communism. The central idea is that if these two different memories of evil were to develop in isolation, their competition for significance would distort the real evils both movements propagated. Whilst many reject this comparison because they feel it could relativize the evil of one of these movements, the claim that a political movement is uniquely evil can only be made by comparing it to another movement. How do these issues affect postwar interrelations between memory and history? Are there tensions between the ways postwar societies remember these atrocities, and the ways in which intellectuals and scholars reconstruct what happened? Nazism and Communism have been constantly compared since the 1920s. A sense of the ways in which these comparisons have been used and abused by both Right and Left belongs to our common history. These twentieth century evils invite comparison, if only because of their traumatic effects. We have an obligation to understand what happened, and we also have an obligation to understand how we have dealt with it.

This is a collection of books 1 - 3 of the Lesser Evils series. Each take place in the dystopian universe established in The Least of 99 Evils. Welcome to the New States of America: Washington DC's been burned to the ground. The President is elected by a lottery machine. Political parties have turned into street gangs. The Coasts have been nuked and the flyover states have been entirely walled-in. This is America at its most craven. Have a nice stay. Included in this edition: Crimson Stain Red, a widower and grizzled veteran of the modern age, is tasked with protecting a small rural town in Texas from any and all threats. Joining his night watch is Rory (a clownish drunk), Bev (a hardened sharpshooter and mother of three), and Casey (a teenager and budding psychopath). Their patrol is interrupted by an odious messenger-- The Forgiveness, a political party / zealous religious cult known for their cruelty, is heading their way, looking for blood and converts. In this bloody neo-western, Red has to prepare his town for the impending massacre. That means he needs to shake hands with shady arms and drug dealers in Dallas, make some home-made napalm, and deal with the ghosts of his past as he bargains with his God for survival. Burn Card Marcy Lopez, a precocious and pragmatically violent Dissent grunt, is tasked to intercept the recently elected President of the New States of America, Cory Koch, while he's escorted out of Las Vegas by the Servicemen. Marcy has the good fortune of having radio support in the form of Jasper (the engineer of this operation) and Cass ( Marcy's lover and tactical researcher) as well as an intrepid knowledge of improvised explosives and only half a conscience. When the situation goes haywire, however, Marcy'll have to navigate Vegas backchannels to keep her mission from imploding. This Dystopian-Thriller takes a side-long tour of a diminished Las Vegas as the plot guns along full throttle, exploring the darkened chambers of once palatial casinos, the dinge of bordering dive bars, a war-torn DMV, and the cruelty of Nevada's unrelenting desert. No Comply With the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation looming over Los Angeles in 1975, only the Hollywood elite and the local riff-raff--too stubborn or poor to move-- remain in the city. Squirrel, a recently orphaned 15-year-old, wastes away his days skating around the barren Dream Factory, doing as many drugs as he can get his hands on, and pulling petty heists with his boyfriend, Roddy. And then Squirrel's forced on a bus and relocated against his will to Phoenix, Arizona. From there, it's an adrenaline-and-beer soaked, psychedelic romp through the political landscape of gangs, drifters and well-organized mercenary armies. He's joined by Nanzia, a fellow "refugee" with a sharp tongue and a world-weary paradigm, and Brix, a Just army grunt tasked with showing Squirrel the ropes. Squirrel has to choose between his principles and survival time and again. But then he has to ask himself if he has any principles.

Groundbreaking exploration of the philosophy underpinning Western humanitarian intervention The principle of the “lesser evil”—the acceptability of pursuing one exceptional course of action in order to prevent a greater injustice—has long been a cornerstone of Western ethical philosophy. From its roots in classical ethics and Christian theology, to Hannah Arendt’s exploration of the work of the Jewish Councils during the Nazi regime, Weizman explores its development in three key transformations of the problem: the defining intervention of Médecins Sans Frontières in mid-1980s Ethiopia; the separation wall in Israel-Palestine; and international and human rights law in Bosnia, Gaza and Iraq. Drawing on a wealth of new research, Weizman charts the latest manifestation of this age-old idea. In doing so he shows how military and political intervention acquired a new “humanitarian” acceptability and legality in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
