Zwischen dem Komischen und dem Avantgardistischen gibt es Parallelen, die bislang kaum von der Forschung gewürdigt wurden, in diesem Band aber erstmals im Mittelpunkt stehen. In 19 Beiträgen werden strukturelle, konzeptionelle und personelle Beziehungen zwischen den beiden scheinbar gegensätzlichen Phänomenen an repräsentativen Beispielen aus der französischen, italienischen, spanischen, deutschen und niederländischen Literatur vom Ende des 19. bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts untersucht. Die Beiträge reichen von der italienischen Scapigliatura über Futurismus, Dadaismus, Expressionismus und Surrealismus bis hin zu Pataphysik, Oulipo und neoavantgardistischen Texten. Auf diese Weise kommen Autoren, Bewegungen und Aspekte, die bisher zu wenig beachtet wurden, in den Blick, bekannte erscheinen in neuem Licht, und auch die beiden Begriffe Avantgarde und Komik gewinnen an Schärfe. Denn weder ist der avantgardistische Impuls auf die sogenannten historischen Avantgarden zu beschränken noch verbleiben komische Verfahren im Harmlosen: Beide überschreiten Grenzen, die es ständig neu zu reflektieren gilt.

In an era of globalization and European standardization, dialect, patois, and linguistic pastiche are marks of identity, of individual and regional nature. Paraphrasing the words of Luigi Pirandello, one tends to use the standard national language to express the concept, while one opts to use one’s regional dialect to express the feeling. The literary tradition has always accepted language mixing. Linguists and literary critics have studied this phenomenon from different perspectives. No in-depth treatment, however, has been offered so far as to the causes, conditions, consequences, and limits of language mixing from both the linguistic and literary points of view. The aim of this book is to start to fill this lack of analysis. Through a plurality of literary subjects, perspectives, and linguistic environments, this publication provides an overview of the linguistic and cultural contributions which underline, in turn, the importance of dialect use and conservation. This book is unique as no other novel can claim to be: one of 109,027,350,432,000 possible variations of the same work of fiction. Inspired by the legend of Tristan and Isolde, Tristano was first published in 1966 in Italian. But only recently has digital technology made it possible to realise the author’s original vision. The novel comprises ten chapters, and the fifteen pairs of paragraphs in each of these are shuffled anew for each published copy. No two versions are the same. The random variations between copies enact the variegations of the human heart, as exemplified by the lovers at the centre of the story. The copies of the English translation of Tristano are individually numbered, starting from 10,000 (running sequentially from the Italian and German editions). Included is a foreword by Umberto Eco explaining how Balestrini’s experiment with the physical medium of the novel demonstrates ‘that originality and creativity are nothing more than the chance handling of a combination’.
