A Passionate Apprentice written by Virginia Woolf and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A Passionate Apprentice comprises the first years of Virginia Woolf's Journal - from 1879 to 1909. Beginning in early January, when Woolf was almost fifteen, the pages open at a time when she was slowly recovering from a period of madness following her mother's death in May 1895. Between this January and the autumn of 1904, Woolf would suffer the deaths of her half-sister and of her father, and survive a summer of madness and suicidal depression. Behind the loss and confusion, however, and always near the surface of her writing is a constructive force at work - a powerful impulse towards health. It was an urge, through writing, to bring order and continuity out of chaos. Putting things into words and giving them deliberate expression had the effect of restoring reality to much that might otherwise have remained insubstantial. This early chronicle represents the beginning of the future Virginia Woolf's apprenticeship as a novelist. These pages show that rare instance when a writer of great importance leaves behind not only the actual documents of an apprenticeship, but also a biographical record of that momentous period as well. In Woolf's words, 'Here is a volume of fairly acute life (the first really lived year of my life).'

The intellectual scope and cultural impact of British writers cannot be assessed without reference to their European fortunes. These essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record the ways in which Virginia Woolf has been translated, evaluated and emulated in different national and linguistic areas of Europe. Diverse as her reception has been, as analyst of consciousness, as a decadent (censored and banned), as stylistic innovator of Modernism, as crusading feminist and socialist, and as a model for other writers, she has emerged as one of the foremost writers and principal icons of the century.

The Eleventh Annual Conference on Virginia Woolf was the first to be held outside the United States. This voyage across the Atlantic was the stimulus for an exploration of themes of voyaging in Woolf’s works, from her interests in travel and cross-cultural encounters to her imaginative voyages between texts and genres . . . and the subsequent voyages her texts have made into the work of others. Published nine years after the conference, this selection of papers by international scholars fills a gap in the chronicles of the Woolf conference. For this reason, several papers feature an Afterword outlining developments in research since 2001, and the book also includes a “Bibliography of Publications Arising from the Conference,” facilitating access to research presented at Bangor but published elsewhere. Another special feature of the volume is the tribute to one of the keynote speakers, Julia Briggs, who died in 2007, in which Beth Rigel Daugherty communicates the gratitude of the scholarly community for Julia’s many contributions to Woolf studies. This welcome publication is a fitting record of our collective voyage as Woolf scholars.

Genealogies Of Environmentalism written by Clarence Glacken and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-28 with Social Science categories.

Clarence Glacken wrote one of the most important books on environmental issues published in the twentieth century. His magnum opus, Traces on the Rhodian Shore, first published in 1967, details the ways in which perceptions of the natural environment have profoundly influenced human enterprise over the centuries while, conversely, permitting humans to radically alter the Earth. Although Glacken did not publish a comparable book before his death in 1989, he did write a follow-up collection of essays—lost works now compiled at last in Genealogies of Environmentalism. This new volume comprises all of Glacken's unpublished writings to follow Traces and covers a broad temporal and geographic canvas, spanning the globe from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Each essay offers a brief intellectual biography of an important environmental thinker and addresses questions such as how many people the Earth can hold, what resources can sustain such populations, and where land for growth is located. This collection—carefully edited and annotated, and organized chronologically—will prove both a classic text and a springboard for further discussions on the history of environmental thought.
