El Libellus de Medicinalibus Indorum Herbis o Codice de la Cruz-Badiano en su version espanola reune estudios y comentarios de diversos autores en los cuales se hace una descripcion historica, medica y tecnica minuciosa del origen y contenido del documento. Por su contenido El libro es un autentico recetario destinado a la curacion de determinados padecimientos. para los cuales se recomiendan principalmente plantas de facil localizacion en la geografia mexicana. Es mas que un simple herbario, puesto que cuenta con numerosos senalamientos de indudable trascendencia medica; debe hacerse hincapie en que su punto de partida teorico resulta muy influido por algunas interpretaciones europeas del tiempo, que ahi se descubren con frecuencia al lado de la constante inclusion de terminos en nahuatl. La obra es por el origen etnico y cultural de sus autores, exclusivamente indigena; mientras que por su concepcion y sentido es mestiza. Es tambien, 'el Codice', la primera obra de las Americas en su genero, muestra de la observacion y la experiencia, la imaginacion mitica y la sensibilidad plastica, que es parte de muchas aportaciones de Xochimilco y Tlatelolco a Mexico y al Continente. El contenido del documento ademas de la descripcion de la preparacion de los remedios contiene los siguientes apartados: presentacion; palabras preliminares; prefacio; introduccion; transcripcion y traduccion; descripcion del codice; las miniaturas que ilustran el codice; comentarios botanicos; la zoologia del codice; los minerales, rocas, suelos y fosiles del manuscrito; estudio historico; valor medico y documental del manuscrito; la odontologia en el codice; bibliografia de copias, traslados y ediciones; nombres nahuas; vocabulario de terminos nahuas en el manuscrito; indices.

The Aztecs and Mixtecs of ancient Mexico recorded their histories pictorially in images painted on hide, paper, and cloth. The tradition of painting history continued even after the Spanish Conquest, as the Spaniards accepted the pictorial histories as valid records of the past. Five Pre-Columbian and some 150 early colonial painted histories survive today. This copiously illustrated book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the Mexican painted history as an intellectual, documentary, and pictorial genre. Elizabeth Hill Boone explores how the Mexican historians conceptualized and painted their past and introduces the major pictorial records: the Aztec annals and cartographic histories and the Mixtec screenfolds and lienzos. Boone focuses her analysis on the kinds of stories told in the histories and on how the manuscripts work pictorially to encode, organize, and preserve these narratives. This twofold investigation broadens our understanding of how preconquest Mexicans used pictographic history for political and social ends. It also demonstrates how graphic writing systems created a broadly understood visual "language" that communicated effectively across ethnic and linguistic boundaries.
