Excerpt from Life and Times of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg One hundred years have passed since, on the 7th of October, 1787, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, D. D., departed this life. J. Chr. Kunze, D. D., in a note found in the pamphlet containing his sermon preached in the Evangelical Lutheran church of the Holy Trinity at New York on the occasion of Muhlenberg's death, says: "A biography of this eminent man shall and must be given to the public. Years ago I read with pleasure a composition from his pen which will serve excellently as a basis of a biography, but will not satisfy the just expectations of those who know properly to estimate his merits. His rare humility there hides the most interesting circumstances, to which many witnesses still can testify. There are many important confidential communications from him in my possession. Almost every one of my brethren in the sacred office in these States is in possession of such communications. One of his sons, or whosoever it might be, would also do a good service to the friends of God's kingdom on earth by weaving all such communications into a somewhat extended biography or by simply publishing selections from them. I say this with the view of encouraging the possessors of such relics to take good care of them and diligently to collect them." The Ephrata Commune written by E.G. Alderfer and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Pre this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-24 with History categories.

E. G. Alderfer has chosen a dramatic story to tell—the founding and subsequent history of Ephrata, a mystical religious community that flourished in eastern Pennsylvania in the mid-eighteenth century. The history of the commune is inseparable from that of its leader, Conrad Beissel, a German Pietist who came to America in 1720 seeking spiritual peace and solitude. When he settled in the virgin forest of Lancaster County, his talents and charisma attraced other German settlers who shared his vision of a community built in the image of apostolic Christianity. In its heyday, from about 1735 to 1765, the community at Ephrata numbered some two hundred people, the celibate members living in simple wooden buildings noted for the harmony and serenity of their architecture. The cultural achievements of the group were exceptional. They produced an extensive body of mystical literature and constructed the most complete printing establishment in the colonies at that time. They were also adept at the art of Fraktur, and many exquisitely decorated manuscripts survive. Music was a particular interest of Beissel's, and the choral music performed at Ephrata was well known and much admired.Mr. Alderfer, who has written widely on colonial Pennsylvania, shows the relationship of the Ephrata commune to other experiments at withdrawal from the world and in particular to the many strands of Old World mysticism and the German Pietist movement. He also discusses American religious and communal movements of later times in the light of the Ephrata experience. His is the first history of the community to provide extensive documentation, including analysis of many surviving manuscripts and books written at Ephrata.Although the commune died out in the nineteenth century, the site and many of the buildingts survived. Today the Ephrata Cloisters Park is operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

This Commemorative Edition of The Notebook of a Colonial Clergyman marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania and celebrates the pioneer missionary spirit and work of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg arrived in the American colonies as 31-year-old Lutheran pastorin 1742, to take up missionary work among the German immigrants who were coming to the New World in search of a new life. His ministry spanned 45 tumultuous years - years of political revolution, years that saw both the birth of a new nation and the establishment of the Lutheran Church on American soil. With the inception of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania in 1748, the Lutheran tradition took on an organizational structure that positioned the fledgling church to grow in the American context. The birth of the new nation and the growth of the new church are uniquely captured in this collection of Muhlenberg's journal entries. These excerpts from Muhlenberg's notebooks take you back to the colonial period with fascinating anecdotes and penetrating insights into the political, religious, and cultural realities of the time. Muhlenberg the man and Muhlenberg the missionary of the gospel of Christ come alive for later generations in these revealing journal entries.

Excerpt from Life Sketches of Lutheran Ministers: North Carolina and Tennessee Synods, 1773-1965 Arriving in America in 1773, when events were moving toward war with England, Nussmann found himself entirely on his own. He could get no further help from his London friends. Moreover, Since the dynasty of George III had come to England from Hanover, he was cut off from the German support that he had expected. Dur ing his first fourteen years in the new world, he sought and found priestly fellow ship With the Rev. Frederick Daser Of Charlestown. Nussmann started his work in North Carolina more than a year before the First Continental Congress met and three years before Independence was declared. The fact that he had already learned to do his own thinking is evident by his giving up Catholicism for the Lutheran faith. Because he actively supported the American Patriots, he suffered physical torture from savage Tories. There were times when he had to hide to save his life. When conditions worsened in the southern states, hefeared that he would have to give up his North Carolina mission. He maintained correspondence with Henry Melchior Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. Muhlenberg recorded in his diary that a letter from Pastor Adolph Nussmann revealed that he was eager to serve the Lord - but does - not know where - even if it were the end of the world. Muhlenberg further recorded that the Whigs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia were in a terrible manner being tortured and killed by the Britons, Tories, and Indians.
