Possibly, it's safest to be sober when using transport outside that provided by known acquaintances, remain alert through out the journey, if uneasy, end your journey when safe to do so, pay pro rata or if necessary full amount, and call somebody known to you to come and pick you up. After a couple of years early retirement, the author returned to work in his late 50s, driving private hire cars as a chauffeur. Thus, the driver becomes the listener, and these are some of the stories of the customers in the back seat. Many of the customers are people who can no longer drive because of injury, a lack of confidence, infirmity or simply by being in a place where they do not wish to drive. Many of them also have a need to discuss important aspects of their lives with a listener.'As drivers, we tend to witness anger, hurt, intolerance and other emotions, apart from pure physical pain or the frustration of physical limitations. We also get to hear about football, grandchildren, fishing and politics.The accidental role of the driver as a listener is accentuated by the physical positioning within the vehicle. There is little eye contact between the parties, a physical separation within the same space exists yet an ability to establish a two-way conversation also presents. I had always thought that this was due to the insular nature of being in a vehicle and the non-judgmental nature of a stranger listening. Friends or family members as listeners may have expectations or prejudicial information and experience and may not be as impartial. I liked the idea that not being face to face and not having the normal eye contact feedback allows personal conversations to occur in a car more easily than if we were to meet a stranger at a coffee shop. This makes me think that counsellors may be able to do better work in a car than within an office.'

Exploring professional passenger driving and the gig economy through feminist theories of labor Are taxi drivers in today’s era of the ride-hail app performing care work akin to domestic and household labor? So argue the authors of Spent behind the Wheel. Bringing together sociological and legal perspectives with feminist theoretical insights, Julietta Hua and Kasturi Ray examine the case study of contemporary professional passenger driving in the United States. On the one hand, they show, the rise of the gig economy has brought new attention to the industry of professional passenger driving. On the other hand, the vulnerabilities that professional drivers experience remain hidden. Drawing on interviews with drivers, labor organizers, and members of licensing commissions, as well as case law and other published resources, Hua and Ray argue that working for ride-hail companies like Uber and Lyft shares similarities with driving for taxi companies in the impact on driver lives. Lyft and Uber sell the idea of industry disruption, but in fact they entrench long-standing modes of extracting the reproductive labor of their drivers for the benefit of consumer lives. Reproductive labor—conventionally understood as feminized labor—is extracted, but masked, behind the masculinized, racialized bodies of drivers. Professional driving is thus best understood alongside domestic and other gendered service work as reproductive labors devalued and often demonetized to benefit the national economy. Spent behind the Wheel is a must for readers interested in critical studies of technological change and the gig economy, showing how drivers’ capacities are drained for the benefit of riders, corporations, and the maintenance of the racial state.
